I recall reading or hearing Gammo saying within the last two weeks that the Red Sox were seriously considering moving Pedroia back to SS next year (with the
implication that he is holding the spot for Inglesias in 2011, but I cannot find a link for what may be a turkey-overdose touch of illusion. Anyone recall
this? If I am not delusional - and even more quixotic, if Gammo is actually right - then if this is true it would change quite a bit as the Sox could wait til
Arb offers are due then choose between 2nd base and SS opportunities.

Why would we ever PH for Varitek? I mean, what if we PH for him, and it goes to extras, and vic martinez gets eaten by
dinosaurs? We'd have to use the emergency catcher.

Also don't be so sure that the Blue Jays offer Scututro arbitration and don't be so sure that he has the offers out there that would make it foolish
for him to accept. The rest of the league sees the very same things in Scutturo that make many posters on this board hesitant to give him a long-term deal.
Age, lack of a long-term track record etc. Plus he's not exactly a tool lovers dream player. If teams are forced to give up a draft pick for him, his
market for a multi-year deal might evaporate pretty quickly.
Even if Scutturo is offered arbitration, one factor that might effect the Red Sox interest in him is the status of Jason Bay. If the Red Sox were to let Bay go and sign Holliday, signing Scuturo woiuld only require only a second round pick. The Red Sox might also be the only team in a position to offer him a multi-year deal. If Scutturo signs for two years ten million and he doesn't work out next year than the Sox can eat year two and not wreck their payroll. |

What is the most Scutaro could receive in arbitration? He only made $1.5 million last year. I don't see anyway the Jays DON'T offer him arbitration.

There might be the fear on their part that agents will shy away from not accepting arbitration based on the way some players in their 30s got hosed on one year
deals last offseason. There really weren't a lot of middle tier signings in the 2-3 year range that I can recall last winter. The big guys got big bucks
(pretty much all Yankees) and most guys got 1 year deals. If I'm the Jays I'd call his bluff, but I don't think it's a slam dunk.

I just don't see it happening. I think $5-$6 million is the most he'll get in arbitration and more likely then not he'll be at about $4 million.
Regardless I think Toronto will offer him arbitration. You either have a player coming off a career year on a one year contract at market value or you have
picks....its a no brainer.

I think they offer chav, I just think there's a slight chance they don't. I do think a lot less teams will offer arbitration for other questionable
guys then we're used to. The same way a lot more players are expected to be non-tendered than usual. I'm really not that into Scutaro personally, even
if he didn't cost us a 1st rounder. He's a decent player but I don't really see him being a difference maker in terms of our team competing with
the Yankees offense.

What does the board think about Jhonny Peralta? Rumors have the Indians non tendering him so we should be able to get him cheap in a trade. A lot less than giving up a first or second round pick. Sure he isnt great but he would be insurance at both 3B and SS if Lowrie cant get healthy. Granted he only played in 40+ games at SS last year but he did have his best season in the field +8.4 UZR/150 and -1.2 in 2008. His K rate is worrisome but he has some good pop for the position and could post an 800+ OPS with us. I just think he might be cheaper in terms of both money and we wouldnt give up a pick. |

The mistake was letting Hardy go to the Twins, not declining Gonzalez option. If the Twins are open to it (doubtful), I'd put my efforts there.
I once lost a bet on who would have the highest season SLG% because of a scorer. The guy I had a bet with had a clear error ruled a double in
the last game of the season and it was the margin of victory.
It was amateur baseball and normally not something you would remember but in this case, the bet was who was going to ask a hot chick named Brin out after she lost her loser boyfriend. The other guy won, she broke up with her bf and he took her out. A year later they got married. Did I mention that she was hot, very hot ? Oh yeah, the official scorer was the other guys mother.
