I would rather have a three way deal with detroit and an unknown team with boston getting Miguel Cabrera, we would give up Casey Kotchman, Clay Buchholz, Brock
Huntzinger, Jed Lowrie, Mark Wagner, Yamaico Navarro and Michael Bowden we would get a few mid level prospects and Miguel Cabrera, Detroit gets Mark Wagner,
Clay Buchholz, Yamaico Navarro Michael Bowden and prospects from the unknown team, the unknown team gets prospects from Detroit and Jed lowrie, Casey Kotchman
the unknown team could be the Mets or a team like them with a need a 1B and utility player

I think that the Santana Trade is a reasonable template from which the Red Sox could pose a trade to the Blue Jays.
Both Santana and Halladay had made clear their desire to sign for big dollars elsewhere prior to a potential trade, both pitchers are Aces in their own right
and both have had a history of excellence in the American League.
The Twins did not received much more than 1 very good player for 1 year of Santana's services and the right to offer him a huge contract - negotiating rights are not worth very much in terms of sabermetrics. Carlos Gomez is a GG OF with a progressing bat, but the trio of Mulvey/Humber/Guerra that Minnosota received were never awe inspiring - and I believe Mulvey was recently waived. A 5 star prospect plus 2 to 3 B/B- level players is a good barometer for a potential Halladay trade proposal. Casey Kelly, a 5 star prospect, plus a good not great MLB ready player like Jed Lowrie (a potential super utility INF and possible Marco Scutaro replacement for Toronto in '10) and/or Michael Bowden, a 4th/5th Starter with plenty of years before arbitration could be intriguing for a rebuilding team like Toronto. Plus 2/3 out of a group like Navarro/Lin/Gibson could fill out the rest of the trade.

I would rather them forget Halliday and use their chips to get A. Gonzales and maybe H. Rameriz. Then sign Bay. Lineup:
Ellsbury CF
Pedroia 2B A. Gonzales 1B (for Clay and 5 minor leaguers not named Kelly) H. Rameriz SS (for 5 minor leaguers including Kelly) Youk 3B Martiniex C Bay LF Ortiz DH Drew RF |

Why would we ever PH for Varitek? I mean, what if we PH for him, and it goes to extras, and vic martinez gets eaten by
dinosaurs? We'd have to use the emergency catcher.

terry180123 wrote: Fleeced? Not really. One year of an ace and the rights to negotiate a massively expensive extension simply doesn't net you that much in prospects these days. Riccardi was canned in part because he cost the Jays at least one top-tier prospect by not dealing Halladay at the deadline. Trading for Halladay is a fundamentally different proposition than trading for Adrian Gonzalez or Hanley or whatever other pipe dream people are obsessed with this week. Specifically, it's a much more realistic proposition. Santana = Gomez + stuff Sabathia = LaPorta + stuff Halladay = Kelly + stuff

Now that I'm thinking about it you are right. The problem with Santana was that he was asking for a huge contract so the Twins had little choice but to trade him to Mets thinking that they will give him a big contract because they were desperate. |

There's no way Halladay waives his no-trade without a huge extension. It's basically the exact same situation.

If Theo is willing to move Buchholz and\or Kelly to get Halladay, I would prefer him to be talking to the Marlins and exploring a trade like:
Buchholz+Lars for Josh Johnson; or Kelly+Kotchman for Ricky Nolasco Not a 33 years old pitcher with a lot of millage in his arm looking for a 5 years $100 millions contract. |

It would take a lot more than Buchholz and Lars to trade for Johnson from the Marlins. i'm sure they will ask for at least 4 to 5 prospects.

I dont think he is going to the Yankees. The Marlins maybe cheap but they are not stupid. They will ask for the moon for this guy. Cashman likes to throw money
to the players but he doesnt like to give up players.

Here is Olney in the ESPN rumors section. This was part of his email from an executive.
http//insider.espn.go.com/mlb/features/rumors
"In order for the Red Sox to trade for Halladay, they would almost certainly have to surrender Clay Buchholz and minor leaguer Casey Kelly. Buchholz has five seasons until he becomes a free agent, looks to be a very productive pitcher, and he might make $25 million over the next five seasons. Halladay will make $15 million next summer alone, and then be in line for an $60 million-$80 million type of deal as a free agent. And Kelly, like Austin Jackson, appears to have an excellent chance to have a high impact in the majors. In terms of cost-efficiency, it makes no sense for the Red Sox or the Yankees to pay a high double-barrelled cost in prospects and free-agent dollars to land Halladay. |
