It's TGG's mission in life to debunk the idea that Casey sits mid-90's.

Well, mission accomplished, because people are talking about him sitting mid-90s if he continues to grow/add velocity.

It's not uncommon for people to continue to grow taller until their early 20's, however Casey is already listed as 6'3" so if that
were accurate, you're only talking about an extra inch or fraction or an inch so he gets to be called 6'4". But the body will continue to grow
and fill out as it matures through the 20's. I believe they expect Kelly to add a few ticks in velo because of this maturation of his body. His mechanics
are sound so the added strength combined with his mechanics should help him do that. Stolmy and Menedez are two guy who seem to have added some velocity as
they mature.
I don't think it's going out on a limb to predict he'll get another MPH or 2 or 3 on his fastball... I think it's crazy to say he'll be in Boston for anything other than a meeting in 2010. |

Gammons is crazy. I've always enjoyed reading him. I particularly enjoy that he respects all the players and people around the game and makes a great
effort to do so even when he's reporting "negatively" about them. But I digress... Does he really believe that Casey Kelly is going to sniff
Boston in 2010? From High A to the majors? Does it happen? Sure it does, but guys like Verlander, King Felix Price, etc do that. Top Top Prospects with
over powering stuff and many of them have collge careers and all of them were full time pitchers.
I could see a super fast track getting him there in some fashion or another in 2011, but not 2010. If the Sox believe that at all then there is no way he gets touched... In that same article SeaSox linked there is an "executive from the Sox" quoted as saying the Sox will not move Kelly or Westmoreland because they are the best they got. |

News of an unclear but less than good character, via Sons of Sam Horn via XM Radio:
Casey Kelly's Dad, Pat, was on XM Home Plate today talking about his sons future. He said that Theo and Casey had their meeting to discuss Casey's future. Although he didn't say exactly what was said in the meeting, he did have some interesting answers. Mostly he mentioned that Casey will not split the season as a pitcher and hitter next season, because Casey has felt that doing so hurt him as a hitter. Pat went so far in the interview to say that being a pitcher was boring for Casey because of the days off and the only reason Kelly gave up his scholarship at Tennessee was because he was told he would be given a legitimate chance at being a hitter. Again, Pat didn't come right out and say that a decision has been made, but the clues certainly point to something that we have feared, and that is Casey Kelly spending a majority of next season in the field. |

If that's the out come of the meeting then it wouldn't shock me to see him traded this offseason. In fact, i might go so far as to say I would like to
see him traded this off season for aHalladay or a Cabrera like player, if he's going to insist on being a short stop.

For the same reasons you'd be happy to see him traded, who would have a strong interest in trading for Casey Kelly as a shortstop?

If Kelly decides to be a shortstop then the writing is on the wall for this kid and unfortunately - his trading partners will view him as a higher risk. It is
too bad because Kelly was not hitting in winter ball and one of these days, he will wake up and smell the coffee. This is the risk in taking a kid, negotiating
a deal for him to forego an athletic scholarship, and then try to split his time. Epstein needs to take control of this situation and say that the time for you
to grow up (in so many words) is now because you are one of our top prospects and your best chance at a career is as a pitcher. If he balks, I would say fine -
we are going to make the decision for you.
Not that it is the same situation - but I remember when JD Drew was acting like a pansy before he ever signed his first contract and well - first impressions are everything. |

Well this is all speculation at this point and if these conversations have taken place then it's between the Sox and Kelly. There is very little reason to
believe that the Sox couldn't trade him without any diminished value. The Sox and any other team coold force Casey to pitch. The reason the Sox would
trade him, in this scenario, is because they didn't want to have an unhappy player around and they could get a top player like Halladay. There is no way
you trade him for anything short...

I still don't understand how you "force" a player to pitch. He's would be an idiot to not choose pitching, especially after his poor showing
this fall, but if he doesn't want to...
This calls into question the Sox' unwillingness to trade him over the last month, and also makes me wonder if they should have moved him up to AA as a pitcher (albeit prematurely) just to give the kid a challenge. He clearly hates the time off, but I also think he was bored with the pitching itself, as his brother alluded to earlier this season, and as we might expect given that that time off should be a way to work on things, and eagerly anticipate the next start; something you wouldn't do if you don't enjoy pitching as is. If this is the path he goes down, we'll all have to hope that he learns quickly, and grows into some power, and we can at least appreciate that he's doing it cause he loves playing, not cause he's desperate for more money or fame. |

He hates the idea of 4 days off between 35 baseball games per season, yet longs for 6 days off between 18 football games per season?
Does he honestly believe he'd be doing anything at Tennessee right now (or even next year), other than holding a clipboard? I think the front office should send him to MLB camp and let him spend a couple weeks facing Lester, Beckett, Bard, Papelbon, etc. and give him a glimse of where his hitting ability has to be. |

What if he's pitching an interleague game and his spot comes up in the order? Can he go into the box without a bat? Are there rules against this?

Kelly's father should not be speaking for him. He's 20 years old. He has be lights out as a pitcher and barely passable as a hitter. Let's see how
bored he is in spring training by facing major league hitters. The Red Sox certainly didn't give him $3 million to be a position player. Of course, if he
insists on continuing to fail as a position player, then his trade value is significantly diminished.
Poorest spending of $3 million that I have ever seen.-fcastig 0220
