The reason i ask is, Pablo Sandoval played in just 41 games and 145 AB's in 2008, but he clearly didnt qualify for the award this season as a rookie which i feel is unjust. So what is the actual cutoff? "A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list)." http://tinyurl.com/ygy8nzp

A baseball source said this morning the Phillies are close to signing Placido Polanco to a three-year, $18 million contract. The contract also includes a mutual option for 2013. The deal is pending a physical.

Red Sox: Will they steal the show? Along with the Mariners, they're the favorites to make the most noise. In addition to seeking Jason Bay or Matt Holliday, the Red Sox usually are the first team mentioned in Roy Halladay and Adrian Gonzalez rumors. Even Theo Epstein would have to admit the meetings were a dud if he doesn't leave with at least one of those four.

BOSTON RED SOX Holes to fill: Shortstop was a concern, given they went through four of them in '09. So they signed Marco Scutaro(notes), a nice player who should get on base a lot for the next couple years. But as David Ortiz(notes) and Mike Lowell(notes) begin their decline and Jason Bay tries out free agency, what GM Theo Epstein most needs is a run producer. Last year, the Red Sox lost out to the Yankees on Mark Teixeira(notes), and the division's balance of power went with him. Bay or Holliday is the most likely addition. They almost have to get one of them. Epstein is also looking to add depth to his starting rotation. Trade winds: The Red Sox have targeted Adrian Gonzalez(notes) for years, seemingly. They might have had a better chance when Kevin Towers was GM, however, as Towers had the standing in San Diego to take the PR hit that surely would follow such a trade. Jed Hoyer, who only weeks ago was Epstein's assistant, would have to clearly win the trade to make it. The Red Sox are among the teams that could take on Miguel Cabrera's(notes) salary if the Tigers were to make him available. Cash considerations: Like the Yankees', the Red Sox's cash considerations are different than most. They've got six arbitration eligibles, Jonathan Papelbon(notes) among them.

Red Sox: They are seemingly linked to every big name available, whether it's in a trade or on the free-agent market. Among the players they are attempting to trade for are Blue Jays right-hander Roy Halladay, Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera, and Nationals left fielder Josh Willingham. The Red Sox are also trying to re-sign left fielder Jason Bay, and have talked to a plethora of free agents, including right-handers John Lackey and Rich Harden, left-hander Erik Bedard, lefty reliever Mike Gonzalez, and right-hander reliever Rafael Soriano. They would be willing to part with right-hander Clay Buchholz in a trade for Halladay, Gonzalez, or Cabrera. The Red Sox would also deal first baseman Casey Kotchman and right-handers Manny Delcarmen, and Daisuke Matsuzaka. The only untouchable in the farm system is pitcher/shortstop Casey Kelly.

Boston: Don't you get the feeling that they're going to end up with Matt Holliday or Jason Bay, no matter what? The Red Sox have a lot going on, as usual, even after signing shortstop Marco Scutaro to fill one of their biggest needs. Mike Lowell is available on the trade market, and the free-agent market is full of options to replace him as the everyday third baseman. Adrian Beltre would be a good fit.
