Maybe they're thinking the way Yamaico struggled in AA last year that he won't make it a whole year on someone's 25-man roster. He may get
selected, but he has stay on the other team's roster for most of the year else he has to be offered back to Boston. He has some refinement (a lot) to be
done with plate discipline. I think with Iglesias and this, they figured it was worth a shot to leave him unprotected.

At age 21 in 2009:
Last 10 games of the season in AA: 57 PAs / 14H / 10BB / .421 OBP. One might think that he had a rough adjustment to AA, but was starting to figure out. At a premium position (if he can stay at SS) and looking at the A+ numbers, I would guess somebody figures it's worth a flyer. Couple phantom injuries with some lengthy AAA rehab assignments, maybe they get lucky.
Just wanted to say that Singer has disallowed me from posting new topics ever since my Freddy Guzman thread. He seemed very upset about my opinions and was
almost hostile in his responses. He must have been upset about something else, I don't know, it was strange. Anyway, apparently he has deemed me unworthy
of starting new discussions. Do I mind? I do mind, the Dude minds. This will not stand, ya know, this aggression will not stand, man.

So, taking out the legwork, this is what the draft order actually shakes down to:
Pick No. Team 1 NY Mets (36) 2 Houston (37) 3 San Diego (39) 4 Oakland (39) 5 Toronto (38) 6 Chicago White Sox (37) 7 Milwaukee (35) 8 Chicago Cubs (38) 9 Seattle (37) 10 Atlanta (38) 11 Texas (37) 12 San Francisco (39) 13 St. Louis (34) 14 Colorado (38) 15 Philadelphia (30) 16 LA Dodgers (33) 17 Boston (32) 18 LA Angels (38) 19 NY Yankees (39)

I like Steve Johnson a lot, but at only 22, I just don't see him sticking on a team like the Red Sox. He would be a great pick up for someone like San
Diego though - a big ballpark so he doesn't get too roasted, and lots of room to allow for a young guy who may have stumbles out of the gate ...

Off the top of my head, only Arizona, Baltimore, Houston, KC, Oakland, Pittsburgh, Toronto and Washington all need SS, are bad enough to carry dead weight all season, and have 40-man space, and most could wait a year or two for him to develop. Several of them also need 3B in case they're worried that's what he'll become. That definitely makes me feel better. Manzanella and Sutil (Hou) and Pennington (Oak) somewhat take their teams out of the equation, but with Mike McCoy the only true SS on the 40-man roster in Toronto, that could definitely be a landing spot. It depends on if they're willing to carry him all season; questionable, but possible. |

I'm sure someone will take him, bring him to Spring Training, see what he does then offer him back to the Sox and hope they don't take him back....
maybe he'll get "injured" too... maybe we all have him over-rated. He was terrible last year.

The most interesting possibiities of the Sox players eligbile for the Rule 5 draft I believe are Daeges, Large, Lentz and Navarro, and possibly Jimenez.
But it also is interesting to note that the 40-man rosters of the worst teams - the teams that most could afford to carry someone who isn't quite ready - are either full, or close to full. By contrast, the Phillies only have 30 on their roster, with the Red Sox second at 32.. The Dodgers also have a lot of room. One would think that the weak teams would have more roster flexibility but that does not seem to be the case.

Navarro is pretty raw offensively in terms of strike zone control and didn't get enough ABs last year due to injury to get a lot of work on his approach.
He can clean out a good fastball, especially ones on the inner third of the plate, but struggles with advanced breaking balls right now. I like his quick
wrists and how he turns on balls, plugging the gap when he squares them up. Navarro tends to jump out of his shoes at breaking balls and chase ones that sweep
across the plate. Defensively, he's pretty smooth and has an above-average arm. I was impressed with his defensive skill the times I saw him make some
plays last year and feel he can be a solid defender at the major league level. Offensively, he has a ways to go in terms of polish to give himself a foothold
in terms pushing towards a major league regular.
To me, the Sox have given a pretty big clue to where they feel Navarro stands in his development. They weren't willing to start the option clock on him in 2010. Its interesting because in the past they've added a guy like Argenis Diaz or Felix Doubront to the 40-Man and have been willing to start the option clock on them. Maybe they are trying to sneak him through the cracks because of the lack of exposure during the season. Not a lot of scouts got a look at him and I know in some conversations he wasn't a guy that scouts got a great read on, especially during his stint in AA. Maybe he gets selected, but I feel like Jimenez or Lentz have a better chance of being selected because they'd have a better chance of sticking on the bottom of a weaker roster and there wouldn't be as much effort involved at keeping them through DL moves, rehabs, etc. We'll see, I guess, as has been stated above. |

DCRi wrote:Well, remember, it's not that simple with regard to roster size. The Red Sox, for example will likely sign or otherwise acquire six more players on their 40-man (SS, LF, 1B/3B, SP, 2 RP), which brings them to 38. I'm not familiar enough with the Phillies' roster situation or farm system to speculate on them, but looking quickly, they probably at least will look for a 3B, and a closer from what we've heard.

Can anyone explain to me how the AAA/AA portions work? Could Navarro be selected in the AAA portion of the draft on-the-cheap and stay off the 25-man that way?
Because I can't imagine he wouldn't get picked up that way, unless the determining factor for protection isn't just the 40-man at that level.

The most interesting possibiities of the Sox players eligbile for the Rule 5 draft I believe are Daeges, Large, Lentz and Navarro, and possibly Jimenez. Shame that Daeges is a lefty. With Hermida, his chances of being on the roster this year are greatly diminished if Bay leaves. Would have been kind of nice to see Daeges get his chance in a platoon situation, as have always like Hermida with the Fish and think he will fit in nicely here. Randor Baird was selected the the O's in the Rule 5 draft previously and Miguel Gonzalez also by Boston. Would be quite interesting to see both selected again and wonder if 2 had ever be reselected from the same team before? Realize that chances of Gonzalez especially are slim with his being injured all of last year. |
