I suggested earlier that by replacing Lowell with Beltre or Kouzmanoff that the Sox would be a better team in 2010... and by a better team I mean it's very "possible-probable" that they'd win more games... Jason Bay W.A.R. 06 - 5.5 07 - 0.1 (his bat disappeared) 08 - 2.4 (Pittsburgh - Boston) 09 - 3.5 Adrian Beltre W.A.R. 06 - 4.6 07 - 3.0 08 - 4.1 09 - 2.4 (injured) 4 years in Seattle which is a graveyard for RH power Theo will be looking at those numbers and wondering... "Hmmm... I wonder how much more offense Beltre would create if HE was playing in Fenway?... and although Jason was not one of our offensive problems on the road... he more than likely was more of a defensive liability there"... Here's the numbers for Kouzmanoff Kevin Kouzmanoff W.A.R. (2007 rookie so no 06 data) 07 - 2.6 08 - 2.6 09 - 2.7 (In San Diego... another RH graveyard) "Hmmm... I wonder what Kooz's numbers would be at Fenway?... The numbers say that it's "probable" that Beltre would directly contribute more wins than Bay... and it's also probable that Kooz out of Petco might do the same... One thing is certain... The defense would be much better... and in turn SHOULD also make the pitching better.... Seattle won 85 games last year... They had the best defense in the major leagues... They also had the best pitching in the AL... Here's some interesting numbers... I'm not really trying to cherry pick anything to support my thoughts... I just found Seattle's season, and the way some of their numbers ended up to be interesting... Numbers of starts from the top 5 in the rotation plus innings pitched Boston 32 - 212.10 32 - 203.10 24 - 131.20 21 - 129.20 16 - 92.00 125 total starts Seattle 34 - 238.20 20 - 133.00 15 - 96.10 15 - 91.20 12 - 83.10 87 total starts Of course Seattle had Felix but Washburn was their number two guy... Can you imagine the Sox winning 85 games if that was all we got out of our top five guys???... Yeah... but we had Smotlz... and Penny... and Dice-K and they were terrible... True... and they had Silva... and French... and Jakubaukus, and they were all terrible too!!!They used 12 starters in 09... we used 11... I'm suggesting that no matter who was on the mound for Seattle... they had the best defense in the MAJORS behind them and it was the defense more than anything else that gave Seattle the best E.R.A. in the AL... One ball not gotten to at the wrong time can cause the flood gates to open... knock a pitcher out of the game... and burns up the bullpen... which in turn carries over to the next game... and a 162 game season is a grind!!! Pitching and defense wins championships... and I believe that defense helps pitching MUCH more than pitching helps defense... and in close games... even more so... How about this amazing number... Seattle won 85 games while scoring the lowest number of runs in the AL!!! (640)... and gave up 52 runs more than they scored (692)... The Royals scored the next lowest amount but it wasn't really close (686)... The only two teams in all of baseball that scored fewer runs than the M's were... the Padres (638) and the Pirates (636)... Four runs separated the bottom three teams in the major leagues... Hmmm... "Yeah... but the Sox played in the AL east so the 85 wins is not such a big deal"... I'm suggesting that it is a big deal for this reason... The M's Pads and Pirates all scored the same amount of runs (a difference of 4)... and the Pads and the Pirates played in weaker divisions than the AL West... So it's probable-possible to assume that we can replace the amount of wins that Jason Bay brings to the team... for much less $$$... and no clogging up the future roster... PLUS get two draft picks by letting Bay walk... What about Lowell??? Mike Lowell W.A.R. 06 - 3.4 07 - 5.3 08 - 3.2 09 - 1.2 If Bay doesn't return... and assuming that Holliday isn't signed... We need a LF who can produce MORE than Lowell... even if we say it's probable to get MORE wins replacing Bay with a defensive 3rd baseman... lets add to the probability by replacing Lowell with a better LF'er...(ideas?... besides Dye-Byrd) Of course all of this is speculation... but not at all unreasonable... I'll close by asking this question... What do you think it would take to get a deal done for Kouzmanoff?... Would Reddick and a lower level pitcher get it done???

Based on our conversations, there's no chance of doing a long-term deal with the Marlins," Sosnick said. "We made it clear that it was going to be this year or it wasn't going to happen. It was now or never. And the Marlins agreed." Johnson, 25, is regarded as one of Major League Baseball's elite young starters. He posted a 15-5 record with a 3.23 ERA this year, struck out 191 batters in 209 innings and made his first career All-Star team. Johnson and his agents used Zack Greinke's four-year, $38 million contract with the Kansas City Royals as a framework in contract discussions. Sosnick said talks broke down when the Marlins declined to offer more than a three-year deal -- which would buy out only one year of free agency for Johnson. Sosnick declined to discuss any differences over money in negotiations. "It seems to me that based on his age and performance, Josh falls into that group of two or three starting pitchers out there whose next contract could very well exceed $100 million," Sosnick said. Back in June, BP also had this on him: Arguelles is considered a better prospect than Iglesias, as a left hander standing 6'3, tipping the scales at 210 lbs., and hitting 93 mph with his fastball. Arguelles has a solid curveball, changeup, and command, along with a recently-added slider that some scouts say has quickly become his best off-speed pitch. Some scouts saw him sitting at 88 mph recently and said Arguelles was out of shape, but other clubs have recently watched him hit 91 mph and say his body isn't a big concern. Every team I've spoken with is comfortable with his talent, given his consistent international performances. Executives agree that Arguelles would have been a late first rounder or sandwich pick in the recent draft, if he entered the draft rather than become a free agent. Anyway, color me disappointed with Gordon Edes as the new guy covering the RS on ESPNBoston. He is already showing his ignorance, claiming that signing Scutaro would cost the Sox two draft picks. I was probably irrationally hoping that they would wise up and hire someone from this site. I guess I'll just keep coming here. Keep up the good work everyone.

I'll take Johnson or Halladay - whoever takes fewer prospects. Though if it's Halladay I want the extension as part of the deal. Johnson, I think you pitch him for a year and see how that arm holds up before you give him $100 mil.

I cant link it bc I heard it on the radio but one of the espn talking heads was talking about that before the playoffs. Said he hates Boston and Yanks. I bet he would play for either if they were the highest bidder.

He is cheap right now for a few years and come spring training will only be 26. It would be a hard decision for me. I would lean towards getting a proven thing for Halladay and try to extend him for 4 years at 20 per. I think he will age pretty well.

Ross would be a perfect 4th outfielder for Boston, as he pounds lefties, plays a good right field (UZR/150 of 2.2), and can play a decent centerfield (UZR/150 of -0.1). I had figured that the Marlins wouldn't trade away their entire outfield, but I'd like to be wrong.

SI.com has reported the World Series champion New York Yankees are interested in trading for Halladay, who is friends with Yankees starter and former Blue Jay A.J. Burnett. Anthopoulos's wish list in a trade for Halladay likely would include a young mid-rotation starting pitcher, a top pitching prospect, a possible major league shortstop and an outfield prospect. Given that information..... Possible Yankee fit: Hughes, Brackman(?), Austin Jackson (no SS fit, possible alternative trade chip: Jesus Montero) Possible Cubs fit: Randy Wells, Andrew Cashner, Starlin Castro, (no OF fit, possible alternative trade chip: Vitters) Possible LAD fit: Chad Billingsley, McDonald, Hu, Lambo (multiple arb. eligible young Dodgers could also be included) Possible BOS fit: Bowden, Kelly, Lowrie, Reddick Madness is like gravity....all you need is a little push.

Rookie Posts: 4 11/21/09 4:40 AM	Marlins cant come to terms with Josh Johnson If Josh is indeed available... He does (imo) become the cream of the crop as far as pitching is concerned this winter... Now you can't leave out another Marlin who's name has been kicked around recently... Dan Uggla... NESN had an article a few days ago about the Sox interest in moving Uggla to LF in case Bay couldn't be re-signed (link)... The Orioles and Giants have also shown interest in acquiring him to play 3rd base... and Uggla probably IS going somewhere this winter... The Sox and Marlins???... seems to be a good relationship between the two teams wouldn't you say?... It's probably a lock that the Sox are kicking this possibility around... This would seem to be a very possible blockbuster but don't think for a minute that the Sox would be the only team in this mix!!!! This package won't come cheap (but much more realistic than Gonzalez/Cabrera) and you can bet the farm that the Yankees will DEFINITELY be in on this one... along with more than a few other teams. Johnson/Uggla is the perfect solution to this year and beyond... Two young players who fill needs... One a masher the other an ace... Uggla says he doesn't want to move from 2B but that's probably not a problem... Here's another reason why I think this fits... Unlike the A-Gon/Votto/Cabrera debates... The Marlins want prospects rather than ML ready talent... Given the fact that our own Josh is becoming a FA next year (unless an extension is worked out... DOUBTFUL)... This could end up being a seamless "changing of the guard" in two positions... and getting MUCH younger while doing it... PLUS for 2010, you could argue that it's the equivalent of re-signing Bay and adding Doc Halladay!!! giving us a legitimate shot at another title...

Last night I thought Halladay but the more I think about it I dont think the Jays would trade within the East with other suitors, so Johnson makes sense. I would rather start a package with Kelly than Westy but its not my call.

The guy constantly throws his own teammates and manager under the bus. Under those demands the sox lineup really well, but that's way too much to give up when you compare it to the Santana deal in similar circumstances. I think the BJays ask for that but have to take back a little less. A lowrie/Bowden/Kelly/Lin deal might be more fitting, but in the end if there are more teams involved than with Santana it will end up costing more. Lowrie at this point still obviously has upside but seems relegated for a super sub role until healthy, which is available in the FA market. Bowden is redundant with Halladay coming in as well as Tazawa around, Lin and Kelly are high talents to pay, but you are getting back a top 5 (AL East) proven pitcher in return. I think the Dodgers are the best fit because of Billingsley's availability, however, there are the money questions floating around about the mccourts.
