Going forward in 2011 I could see the DH spot being occupied by V Mart with Joe Mauer getting about 40 games there to rest him. But thats not till 2011.

Sibby Sisti wrote:Jacoby might be worst by position, but I guarantee he's a better defender than Holliday, and he at least has better range than Drew. As for how you get a DH in the future, it could either be an opportunity to rest players on occasion (Victor, Mauer or an aging Youkilis) or it could be an opportunity for a player, possibly from our own system, who can hit but isn't an amazing fielder (group might include Lars, Daeges, Jimenez and Still.) From Fox Sports:
I wonder if this is the Angels seeing the two players differently than most of us here, or if it's an understanding that they won't be able to afford Holliday (or do they generally shy away from Boras.) |

Maybe agent speak but according to Urbon, Bay has been getting extraordinary interest.
Bay getting huge interest? |

Nolson20 wrote:A quick Bay signing with another club is huge for Boras, as he would have to know that pushes Boston into a "must" signing of Holliday. I know some are operating with the idea that there is a third option here, but in my mind this is an either/or between Bay and Holliday for Boston. That's why I believe the FO needs to act quickly on one or the other and not try to out-think the situation. Pay the money for Holliday and move on to the next task (Halladay).

Theo has stated two things he wants to improve next season... Better defense and the need to be a better team on the road... Let's dig a little deeper into
realistic options that might be available... The biggest bind the Red Sox are in right now is no roster flexibility... combined with "almost" no
chance... of moving either Lowell or Ortiz (the two players that hinder roster flexibility the most)... Bay/Kotchman/Lowell/Ortiz) either play only one
position... or no position... and the Sox love flexibility... which leads me to these thoughts...
Ortiz had a horrendously dismal OPS on the road, but he has a full no trade clause so moving him would be the toughest of all... Lowell on the other hand still has some value... Next to Ortiz... Mike had the next worst road OPS... plus he can't play defense very well any longer... plus he can't run... He's simply a liability away from Fenway... Mike HAS TO GO!!!... The idea of the Sox going after Adrian Beltre has been brought up... I'm going to bring his name up again... Beltre is a hacker and is not a high OB% type of player... but he is a RH pull hitter with power who plays GG defense at 3B... He was counted on as being "the guy" in the Mariners offense... he wouldn't have that pressure in Fenway... There is speculation that he is a "laid back" type of player and may be better suited to the west coast but Theo loves the guy... He's 30 years old and is a type B FA (no lost draft picks) While the Sox will probably not be able to swing a deal for Adrian Gonzalez... The Padres 3rd baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff "The Crushin' Russian" is reportedly on the block... another RH hitter with pop who could really blossom in Fenway... He's 28 years old... cost controlled... and is a better defender than Beltre!!!... Plus the Pads have an in house replacement for him... This is a guy I would LOVE to see in a Sox uniform... Mike HAS TO GO!!!... The idea of moving Youk to 3rd is an option... but not the best option... Youk is a great defender at 1st, and an average 3rd baseman... PLUS if you move him to 3rd... you HAVE to get a 1st baseman...and empty the farm to do it!!! Why put yourself in that position when it's very possible to get fairly low cost GG defense ,with RH power, at 3B, from either the FA market (Beltre) or the trade market (Kooz)... Plus if you go out and get a 1st baseman... you create even more of a problem by having to sit V-Mart on the days when he's not catching or at DH.... and if you don't trade Lowell... That problem becomes MUCH worse... I'd love to pencil Lowrie in at 3rd this year... but given the injuries... You can't do that... If the Sox trade Lowell they become a much better team defensively at both 1st and 3rd... and I'll suggest that they lose nothing offensively... as a matter of fact... if you look at war... it's very possiblr that Beltre actually replaces Bay's value and not Lowell's... and they become much more flexible.... Youk potential GG at 1st Kooz/Beltre potential GG at 3rd a switch hitting super-sub in Jed Lowrie a backup at 3rd in Youk a backup at 1st with V-Mart a backup at DH with V-Mart Also ... If Gonzalez comes back... The weakest part of his defensive game is going to his right... If you tighten up the D at 3rd... I'm suggesting that Gonzalez becomes an even better defensive SS... Also this frees the Sox up in regards to Kotchman... Mike HAS TO GO!!!... even if you have to subsidize his contract... or trade him for another bad contract that better serves you at a different position or pitching... Even if you get nothing in return... Mike HAS TO GO!!!

A couple of morning notes from ESPN rumors.
http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/features/rumors Silverman says Bay likely will have "substantive discussions" with at least six teams, with the Mets, Cardinals, Giants, Blue Jays, Angels and Mariners believed to be interested. Bill Shaikin of the LA Times says Lackey is believed to have set the Yankees deal with A.J. Burnett -- five years, $82.5 million -- as a starting point for his negotiations. K Laws top 50 FA are up also. Linked but insider. One name caught my eye. Noel Arguelles who defected with Chapman. He came in at No. 10 on Laws list. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/hotstove09/insider/columns/story?columnist=law_keith&id=4647444 Arguelles is 19 and already pitches with a solid-average fastball, although before he defected he had worked as high as 91-94 and will probably return there once he's throwing on a regular schedule again. His changeup projects better than his curveball, with the change a potentially plus pitch. What everyone notices about Arguelles is his body -- loose, lean, athletic, with good projection; If he was an American high school or junior college player, he'd be a solid first-rounder with a chance to be a top-10 guy and would probably be a $4 million bonus baby. As a free agent, he should easily double that. Edit: Arguelles info

If you move Lowell, and are looking for a new 3B by trade, Dan Uggla could be available, and apparently the clubs looking at him so far are considering him for
the hot corner.

The layers of an organization that is trying to sell out every game and compete with the Yankees while maintaining a consistent developmental flow at the same
time are complex. Having lost its assistant general manager, Jed Hoyer, to San Diego, Boston is now trying to hold onto a vital piece of its long-term plans,
scouting director Jason McLeod, who has been offered the No. 2 role behind Hoyer in his hometown of San Diego. From the Latest Gammons article.
McLeod has done a great job i hope they dont lose him. |
