Unfortunately, everything leading up to the 4th down was a clusterfuck. The timeouts and the play calling on the 1st 3 downs were just downright awful.

Going for it was absolutely right the call. On the Colts' 2 other drives in the 4th quarter (I'm excluding the one that resulted in a pick on the 1st
play), they went 79 yards both times, both in under 2 minutes using 0 timeouts. There was absolutely no reason to believe --none, zero, zip, nada-- that Peyton
wouldn't have led another 70 yard scoring drive in 2 minutes, especially with TO's in his pocket. Punting the ball back to Manning was giving the game
away. Going for it was the best chance of winning that game, because it was the only thing that had a possibility of keeping the ball away from Manning.

I kind of find it hard to believe that the Colts defensive backs started covering the Pats in the 2nd half after how they were getting picked apart. They were
so bad that the only way to likely start making coverages was probably illegal contacts and holds down the field which obviously weren't called. The brutal
PI on Butler late in the game was just horrendous. As for the officials spot on the 4th and 2 as well.

I have much less of a problem with going for it on fourth down as I do with the mismanagement of the timeouts that led to the Pats' inability to challenge the spot, particularly because I think doing so would have given them the first down and the game. Let's face it, going for it was more of a "wow, that's ballsy, and I'm not sure whether or not it's the right decision" than a GradyLittleleavingPedroin sort of "WHAT THE F--- IS HE DOING?" Of course, being of the belief that NFL teams are way too conservative in terms of going for it on fourth down to begin with, perhaps I'm inclined not to mind it as much.

I don't listen to the big show anymore with the new station out or any other WEEI shows. What'd you think of the Butler PI call? If anything that
should have been offensive PI on Collie. I also did see some plays where the Colts got away with some illegal contact after the 5 yards none of which were
called. But the key play was the Colts holding the Pats to that last FG. Had they picked up the first down then another 3 minutes burn off the clock and even
if the Pats had kicked the FG after that the game would have been practically over.

That three mill in cap space just sitting there is eating a hole in me, thinking that 1 mil dollar better offer and greg ellis would be here, or Jason Taylor
wanting a ring. This team needs a pass rush, when TBC going down alters how well you play on defense its red alert time.

I'm with Lippa. I think the odds were higher that we convert on 4th and 2 than they were that we would stop them on defense.
What was unfortunate was that Addai got stopped at the 1. It's one thing letting him waltz in from the 13, but once he already made it to the 3 and gotten the first down, I would have rather him score, giving Brady the chance to go get a field goal with 1:10 left on the clock. |

Why would we ever PH for Varitek? I mean, what if we PH for him, and it goes to extras, and vic martinez gets eaten by
dinosaurs? We'd have to use the emergency catcher.

Let's not dwell on mistakes made by officials, and bitch about them. That would make us Colts fans.

Call me crazy, but I think that loss had less to do with the officiating, and more to do with the fact that the Pat's offense, defense, and coaching (going
for it on fourth down was a good move, actually, but burning those timeouts was downright criminal) all went to complete SHIT in the fourth quarter in a way I
can't ever remember seeing with this team. That may have been the more important factor.

Either way if they didn't mismanage their timeouts at the end they would have still had one to challenge the play. This will just make it that much better
when we beat them in the playoffs.

I first said Belichick gave up the game when he made that decision, but I took a step back and understood where he was coming from later on this week. In
hindsight, I would have punted, but he did make a "Ballsy" call and it didn't work out.
I will say right now, that the Patriots will not lose another game this season. They obviously have these easy games in the bag, but the "amazing" Saints haven't beat anyone reputable so I think we take that game. Moss and Welker are still the deadliest combination in the NFL. Hands down. |
