Apparently in Scott Boras world, economic downturns and aging do not exist. Coming up tomorrow: everyone in Scott Boras' world gets their own unicorn. EDIT: More Olney: And there is this to consider: Last winter, the Yankees almost single-handedly propped up a weakening free agent market, contributing about 35 percent of all dollars spent on free agents, about $423 million. This winter, that won't happen, the Yankees fully intend to reduce their payroll. Olney is propping up the Hot Stove discussion today..... Madness is like gravity....all you need is a little push. Using basic math, the Yankees total attendance (not counting playoffs) was 3.7 million this year at an average of $73 dollars a ticket. That puts them roughly at $271.5 million in ticket sales alone. Compare that to '08 when they had 4.3 million at $41.40 a ticket, equaling about $178 million. Again, the '09 figures do not include the 8 playoff games or the other lucrative revenue streams they have coming in. I realize the numbers above are not exact, but the margin of error is nowhere near large enough to conclude the Yankees should be reducing payroll next year... unless the Steinbrenners are planning on buying 75% of the field for the 2010 Kentucky derby.

But your odds are ignoring the $15 million in raises due to 5 players currently under contract. That leaves ~$35M for arb cases, league min players, LF, DH, and at least 1 SP. Veteran Member Posts: 71 11/12/09 1:04 PM	Mark Fiensand ruminating on possible Roy Halladay trade discussions dropped this little speculative tidbit that, I believe, was subject to some discussion in this distinguished forum recently: Halladay wants out of Toronto, but it's unlikely that he would waive his no-trade clause to be dealt to a team unless he was able to sign a long-term extension - something only a select few teams have the resources to do, most notably the Yankees and Red Sox. Now perhaps Feinsand heard this from Halladay's agent, or perhaps his talking out his very large...hat. But for entertainment purposes, let's assume the agent tipped him on this. SO: if Sox get into a "trade war" with the Yanks and it comes down to giving Halladay a 5 year extension (where Theo would prob prefer 3 year and 4 max) do you (i.e Theo) let him go to the Yanks for that 5th year knowing you'll be facing Sabathia, Halladay, & Burnnet for the next 4 years (with Burnett gone after that)?

Thus, everyone on their roster is available except first baseman Joey Votto, outfielder Jay Bruce and third baseman Scott Rolen, according to one source with knowledge of the club's thinking. The team's highest-priced players - closer Francisco Cordero, second baseman Brandon Phillips and right-handers Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo - all are in play. Cot's: Cincy Madness is like gravity....all you need is a little push.

They will have paid $100+ million over the 6 years, $16+ million per year. Just because Boras refused to accept that 50 million posting fee as part of Dice-k's contract doesn't mean the sox don't consider it such. And at over $16 million average per year, he better be a #2.

Veteran Member Posts: 250 11/13/09 11:35 AM	The Kalish interview got me thinking about how it takes players some time both mentally and physically to recover from an injury. Doyou all think this is playing into Theo's plans for Lowell and Papi? It would give them an extra off season to recover and if they arent playing 100% healthy next year it wont happen again for them. Lowell was still pretty decent with the bat but his defense regressed from 15.6 UZR/150 in 2008 to -14.4 last year. What are the odds of his hip letting him play Ave + D at 3B for one more season. Could a guy like Jack Wilson make up for Lowells lack of range on the left side and not lose too much at the bat from Lowrie? I think Papi's elite days are over but I dont see why we cant expect his post June #'s for a full season. If they dont think Lowell can answer the bell at 3B I think they have to make a trade or signing this off season. I would love Agon but the more I think about it,can Youk play Ave D at 3B? Im starting to think Agon will open the season in SD anyway. Hoyer could use the extra time to evaluate their system and get the right pieces in there if they did trade him. Who knows maybe their finish wasn't a fluke.
