I don't think arbitration applies in the case of Tek since there were mutual options in place, (I think) the Sox for $5 million and Tek for $3 million.
Today the Sox declined their option. Tek still can exercise his. But if he doesn't then he is a free agent and can sign with anyone without any draft
picks going to the Sox. If he does, one would assume the Sox would try to negotiate a buy out. It seems almost certain that he is done as a player with the
Sox.

I think Tek would still be eligible to be offered arbitration, unless I'm missing something. Under normal circumstances, you can decline an option and
still offer a player arbitration. What about his situation alters that?

< Back to front page Text size - + Cashman: No debate Yankees are team of the decade
Permalink|Comments (0) Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff November 9, 2009 04:28 PM CHICAGO - World Series champion general manager Brian Cashman of the New York Yankees was asked 'Who is the team of the decade, Boston or New York?" "I dont think it's even close. The numbers speak for themselves. Is there a debate? I know this doesnt belong in this thread but this statement makes my blood boil. Who the heck does he think he is? If it wasnt it for the Steinbrenner's money would be able to put up a decent team with little money like the Rays? I dont thinks so. |

Worthless accolade aside, I don't think you can bookend a decade and be labelled as the team of the decade. Sure, they won more games than anyone from
00-09 and tied for the lead in World Series', but from 02-08, they were seen as a disappointment for the majority of that time because they had the best
team on paper year after year and came up short. Like I said, it's a stupid pseudo-award, but they came up short and even became a laughingstock because of
their payroll.
To put it best; when a marathon runner walks, it's not an accomplishment. When a parapalegic walks, that's an accomplishment. |

Yankees average 96.5 wins a season and win 2 World Series. Red Sox average 92 wins per season and win 2 World Series.

In the past decade, they have bested the Sox in games won (965 to 920), division titles (8 to 1), playoff appearances (9 to 6), and AL pennants (4 to 2). And
they're tied in World Series victories (2 each).
I really don't think the nature of the competition is to win more with less money; it's a competition to win more, period.

I didnt like the fact that he said that "Is there a debate?" Like everybody should get it that the yankees are the team and eveybody should know
that.

Aren't Decades from 1-0 (2001-2010)
I'm not sure if this has been posted elsewhere but Wake signed a $5 Mil/2 yr deal (10: $3.5, 11: $1.5) http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2009/11/09/wakefield-close-to-agreement-on-new-two-year-deal/

No. Decades are from 0-9 (2000-2009). Centuries, and I believe millenniums, are from 1-0 (2001-2010).
Carry on.
Why would we ever PH for Varitek? I mean, what if we PH for him, and it goes to extras, and vic martinez gets eaten by
dinosaurs? We'd have to use the emergency catcher.

"Uhh... well it's obviously my team." Good work, Boston Globe!

Couldn't say it better. If we're arguing this point. Yikes!! Just think back 10 years. I believe most of us considered the decade of the 90's. 90-99. Just because the argument fits us now. You can't change that. I would change the argument to this. The Yankees stated goal is to win the championship every year. If they don't, it's not a successful year. They won 2. We won 2. According to my math. That's a tie. |

Okay, so what constitutes a worthy tiebreaker?
