I'm actually wondering if the thought might be that development at the MLB level while backing up Lowrie. I have yet to see any negative criticism of his
defensive abilities and based on those tools alone, he could be a major leaguer. He could get a hell of a lot of AB's (albeit not game action) over the
winter. At minimum, it's a backup plan in case they don't make a major move for a SS that could be moved to 3B later like Hanley or pick up one like
AGon at a discount.

As has been said in each blog post I've read about the Sox declining his option, as well as constantly on this board until it happened, declining the $6M option was pretty much a given. There's a pretty significant chance that Gonzalez returns for less money.

Also, under the assumption that 'someday' means 2011, keep in mind that by 2011, he'll have had 2 falls, 2 winters, 2 springs and a year of limited ML exposure all with Sox coaching. ADD: (Sorry about the string post) If you go back several seasons and look at the top shortstop UZR's, you will find that in varies a lot and averages somewhere in the magnitude of 27 or 28. If you consider Lowrie to be an average shortstop, 27 or 28 will have a significant effect on pythag, especially in a backup situational role.

Situation, it's 7th or later and the Sox have a 1 or 2 run lead (happens a lot). Who do you want as your infield, Lowrie SS - Lowell 3B or Lowrie 3B -
Iglesias SS ?

I would prefer it if we gave the 19 year old a chance to improve against age-appropriate pitching instead of throwing a 19 year old in the fire of pitchers 5-10 years his age. Seriously, the Sox didn't give him a $6M bonus to be a utility infielder.

I absolutely don't think the Sox gave him an $8.25m contract to be a utility player. I question whether the net return to the Sox after 2011 with a
year's minor league at bats is greater than the return from having him be a major league situational utility player in 2010.
I'm not sure how you meant fire. In the usual sense that word would imply pressure situations. Keep in mind that the man left his country behind him to take a chance. That's real pressure. If you are referring to the quality of pitches he will see, how much is he going to improve seeing pitches with less quality ? We have a very unique situation here, he has an impact glove that is major league ready.

I don't necessarily agree with it because I think the Sox feel he has the potential to develop into at least an average hitter, or else they wouldn't gave given him that kind of bonus. Again, he's 19 years old. You have to at least give him a chance to improve as a hitter. If in three years he isn't showing much improvement, you still have a very good 23 year old sit-utility player on your hands. Secondly, those "less quality" pitchers you talk about happen to be his true talent level. This isn't like Jeremy Hermida hitting against IL pitching. |

It will be interesting to see where the Sox start him, for sure. I'd imagine your Salem projection is pretty accurate, but we know the Sox will push him,
and maybe even start him at AA, if they're confident he can succeed there as early as next spring (obviously he doesn't seem to be there, given his
performance in the AFL). That said, from the limited amount I've seen and heard about him, it doesn't seem like A+ will be pushing him that hard,
really.

Youk is going to have to get to 1B a hell of a lot faster than he's used to. The moves between fielding and set were so fast and so automatic that he made
Castro look human like.

TheGoldenGreek33 wrote:I've never seen Diaz but I'm going to take a wild guess that this is two different animals. I seriously doubt if Diaz' hands were that fast. Looking at his body type, I'm guessing that he's not going to be the rangiest SS in baseball but judging by hand speed I'd guess that his out conversion rate will be off the charts.

Seeing Argenis at the complex in both 2008 and 2009, and watching Iglesias take ground balls on that video, they are very similar. Maybe Cem can share his
thoughts on this as well, but Diaz remains the most gifted defensive shortstop I've seen live from the minor league level. From his footwork before
fielding the ball to his fluidity in his actions, just outstanding. I stand by my original comment.
As far as looking at Iglesias' body type to determine whether or not he'll have plus range, I think that's a bit unfair, IMO. No, Iglesias isn't a burner, but there have been multiple live reports saying he has plus instincts and described him as more quick than fast. Combine that with great footwork, and I think that's more than enough evidence to say he has plus, or even plus-plus range.

Fair enough, I'll take your opinion since as I said I haven't seen Agenis. If Iglesias' feet are as fast as his hands, that would almost be too
much to ask for. I haven't seen any reports which highlighted range, only hands and the hands part is very clear.

I watched Iglesias every day he was at The Fort, believe me, he has plus-plus range,
and he is a great kid who loves the game, 120% all the time. |
