Potential non-tender candidates (courtesy of www.mlbtraderumors.com, with my edits)
December 12th marks baseball's non-tender deadline. Unsigned players on a team's 40-man roster who not tendered a contract become free agents. It is a chance for certain players to reach free agency without putting in the typical six years of service time. David Ortiz is the most famous non-tendered player. Jeremy Accardo Brian Anderson Garrett Atkins John Bale Jose Bautista Boof Bonser Brian Bruney Taylor Buchholz John Buck Dave Bush Ryan Church Neal Cotts Jack Cust Mike Fontenot Ryan Garko Chad Gaudin Jody Gerut Jonny Gomes Gabe Gross Conor Jackson Mike Jacobs Bobby Jenks Kelly Johnson Logan Kensing Ryan Langerhans Matt Lindstrom John Maine Andy Marte Seth McClung Brandon Medders Sergio Mitre Dioner Navarro Laynce Nix Scott Olsen Kelly Shoppach Tim Redding Jeremy Reed Jason Repko Cory Sullivan Brian Tallet Doug Waechter Chien-Ming Wang

Abreu deal according to Ed Price:
2 years/ $19 million; $1 million buyout on $9M option for 2012 that can be guaranteed base on PAs. That's a good deal for Abreu considering age, defense, etc. Perhaps this sets the tone for offensive minded corner OFs who can't play a lick of defense. |

His '09 numbers at AAA Columbus are really hard to ignore: .327/.369/.593/.963, 16.7 K%, and .267 ISO. But he, like many guys in AAA, hasn't exactly figured it out at the MLB level. He just turned 26 and he's always been considered a plus defender at 3B. He's got his flaws and, up to this point, Hermida is more proven - but he certainly wouldn't cost much and could easily be labeled as another low risk/high reward acquisition. I was somewhat surprised to see him on this list. |

Per Rotoworld, J.J. Hardy to Minnesota for Carlos Gomez. So I guess: 1. Hardy's not an option for the Sox 2. Cabrera not returning to Minny (seems like he
wanted to) 3. Cameron might not be returning to Milwaukee 4. Span is full time CF in Minny 5. Delmon Young may be spared (some thought NT in future, especially
if Twins wanted Span, Gomez, Cuddyer OF). Small trade with many potential ramifications. Interesting.

Well, we do need 3B depth at Pawtucket, unless you all think Jimenez is ready to fill in. I wonder if the Sox might be able to completely restock their AAA
team with some of these non-tenders. We have particular need at 3B, 2B and SS, while having surpluses in the OF, including Nava, Engel and Daeges, as well as
Brown, KJohnson, Mills and potentially Jimenez, who possibly could have enough upside to help another club ala Hunter Jones. By making pairings like that last
trade, the Sox could greatly increase their own personal "replacement-level."

Yirmiyahu wrote:Who cares? He came back this year and had the kind of bounce back season that reminded some he was once considered the best prospect in baseball. Besides, there are plenty of players who were DFA'd and went on to have productive MLB careers. And by all accounts, Hermida's value (0.4 wins over replacement the last two years combined) would lead you to suggest he has been less than average at the MLB level. Outside of more PAs, the only real difference between the two (as of today), is Marte would cost a fraction of Hermida's 2010 salary. |

What does everyone think the Angels will do about their logjam in the infield? They have Aybar (SS), Kendrick (2B), Izturis (2B/SS/3B), top prospect Brandon
Wood (SS/3B), and might re-sign Figgins (3B/2B). They could let Figgins walk, without replacing him, and let Izturis and Wood share 3B duties. But if they sign
Figgins or another starting third baseman, they'll need to move someone. The natural move would be to trade Wood (who was often discussed in trade rumors
at the deadline). But Wood's value is somewhat low, as he hasn't produced at the MLB level yet, while Izturis had a career year and is eligible for
free agency after the season. If the Angels shop Izturis, I think he'd be perfect for the Red Sox as a one-year stopgap at SS, as well as filling in at 2B
and 3B.

I was thinking the same thing earlier, but clearly he's not a strong defensive SS, or he would be playing there already. His UZR #'s are all over the
place, but are generally worse for SS (as we might expect) and certainly don't give me a ton of confidence in him. While he would help our offense, and
could be a great Super Utility guy, my personal opinion is that we'd struggle with him at SS every day, especially considering our defensive issues at 3B.

SoxSail wrote:I don't understand what you mean about his UZR numbers being all over the place... For infielders, I tend to trust UZR/150 as a good stat, if the sample size is large enough. His UZR/150, by position: 2B: 7.4 (1176.3 innings) SS: 4.7 (1144.3 innings) 3B: 1.4 (1489.3 innings) As far as "he's not a strong defensive SS, or he would be playing there already," Scioscia does weird things with his backups/starters and moving guys around between positions. And Izturis has averaged about 100 games and 380 PA's over the last 4 seasons, which is a lot of playing time for a "backup". Anyway, I have no idea if he's available; I just thought I'd throw it out there. |

Yirmiyahu wrote:This sheds a little new light. Is it kosher to take these small sample sizes from over the years and add them all up like this? I was originally ignoring his UZR because his yearly numbers ranged from -32.7 to 35.8 and were inconsistent across either position or year. Obviously they are also small sample sizes. But the compiled numbers, over many innings, compute with his decent range, solid glove, and lack of a canon for an arm. He still may be hard to get, and I'm not sure why the Angels haven't just settled on him at SS, but yeah, he seems like he could be a viable guy there for a year or two in Boston, if we believe he's an average or just above defender. |

If the Brewers really believe that Gomez can replace Cameron, they'll have a savings of about 16.5 M. Pretty important for a mid-market team, and this year
that could go a very long way. I'm still wait-and-see about Gomez.

They wanted Buchholz and then they trade him for Gomez? Thats a pretty big drop-off.

A CF prospect would have worked, but the Sox didn't have one ready for the Show to offer (apparently Reddick isn't good enough.) That's what the Globe was trying to say: http://www.boston.com/spo...dsox/extras/extra_bases/ The Sox have been talking about Hardy since before the trade deadline, but never worked anything out. |

Saito is a type A free agent... does the fact the Sox declined the option mean they cannot get compensation for him by offering arbitration? or is it possible
for the Sox to get frist round & Sandwhich round compensation for Saito, Bay and Wagner? Here's hoping they actually resign Bay and just get first
rounders for the other 2...
