You read any Marlines beat writers, bloogers, fan comments on blogs and they all talk about how he is oafish, lazy, rather be somewhere else, etc. I still like the move and it may be unwarranted like it is with JD...just an even keel approach. We shall see which it is.

Theo's going to go hard after one of several guys: LaPorta, Gamel, Felix, or Adrian Gonzalez. Those are young, build-around players that this team needs, and Hermida is a classic complementary piece with good upside potential.

Well except he's not got serious long term health issues, he's controlled for 2 years, is younger and has more upside - but can't play CF. Other than that, if you mean he's a cheap OF who has upside and downside. Yes I guess so

Of course playing in front of 37k passionate fans 81x/year instead of 8k may ignite something as well I hung out with Hermida one night in Atlanta. His childhood friend was a coworker of mine. It was after the '07 season (his best to date). He's just a normal, good guy. Nothing stuck out about him that screamed a-hole. Wasn't "above" anyone. He's extremely laid back, though. He's not a Youk or Pedey mold. So yeah, there's your "off-the-field" personality report.

He made a very clear point, numerous times, that Sox fans should not get too excited about Hermida. He said on paper it is easy to get excited about the guy because of his potential. But, he was the only Marlin to be boo'd by the fans in FL. And you have to be pretty bad to get those fans worked up. It wasn't as much his performance as it was his failure to live up to the hype combined with what was said to be a poor attitude/work ethic. It was noted that there is obviously the chance he turns it around after being relieved of the scrutiny he was under. But, Boston isn't exactly known for its lax playing environment. As for Hermida being thrown around in trade discussions, I don't see how people can rationalize that. First off, if his trade value was defined by Alvarez and Jones, why would that value all of a sudden increase to make him a legitimate piece of a trade for someone like Gonzalez? Especially with no playing time (and good performance in that playing time) to indicate an appreciation of value could occur. And secondly, the comments by many people from FL seem to indicate the guy has regressed dramatically. So I'm not sure how one could spin that into making him seem like a legitimate "prospect". I see this as another low risk-high upside investment by Theo. I definitely like the move and its a move we can afford to make. We can pay a 4th outfielder an upwards of 4-5 million a year, the Marlins can't. But, I don't see this as a part of some grand scheme to acquire a huge talent.

Maybe that says something about his development. The options also gives us roster flexibility, if need be.
