When Epstein talked to Hermida, he could not define his role. Boston wants to re-sign Jason Bay, who thus far has brushed off a four-year, $60 million offer. If the Red Sox don't sign Bay, they'd like to sign Matt Holliday, and they have a mutually respectful relationship with Scott Boras and a family connection between Holliday and John Farrell.
Red Sox acquire Jeremy Hermida for Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez

The corollary to whether this blocks Reddick, is who it opens doors for. There are several guys who will be looking for an opportunity here, including Yeiper,
Consuegra and perhaps Younginer. The people this trade helps the most are whoever gets Alvarez and Jones' spots, and Alvarez and Jones themselves, who both
figure to have greater roles in the Florida organization.

Nothing stuck out about him that screamed a-hole. Wasn't "above" anyone. He's extremely laid back, though. He's not a Youk or Pedey mold. So yeah, there's your "off-the-field" personality report. |

this is awesome!! I really like this move. Alvarez shows some upside and had a great year but Hermida is still a young left handed hitter and has tremendous
talent. I like it alot!!

Considering what the Sox gave up this is a very good move, but I really don't want Hermida to be the team's starting LFer next season. I still think they have no choice but to sign one of Bay or Holliday...unless of course they were able to trade for one of the impact bats that doesn't appear to be available at the time.
Why would we ever PH for Varitek? I mean, what if we PH for him, and it goes to extras, and vic martinez gets eaten by
dinosaurs? We'd have to use the emergency catcher.

With only one center fielder (and not a terribly good defensive one, regardless of how flashy his catches are) on the roster, any fourth outfielder for the Sox would have to be at least passable in center, as I doubt very much that the team could live with JD Drew as the backup there. Hermida, on this team, makes more sense as a platoon player in left should the Red Sox not acquire a full-time starter there, or as insurance depth headed into the spring, with an eye toward trading him or Kotchman if everyone stays healthy. |

I don't see how anyone could be against this trade. Alvarez put up fantastic stats last season in Lowell, but the fact is that he does not have
overpowering stuff and he is a good trade chip. And with Hunter Jones, this is like a benefit to the team, not only does it clear a spot on the 40-man roster,
but it really clears the way for Dustin Richardson to be that lefty specialist that they saw some of late last season.

Hopefully Theo's explanation will get it through that he's not going to be their LF replacement for Bay. It's strictly an acquisition to see if he
can fulfill his true potential.

He could platoon with Eric Byrnes to create a semi decent, quite expensive LF that nets the Sox another Drew.

No way they trade for a starting LF before FA even opens up. Could this be plan F as an insurance policy, sure. But the team has to still go after either
Holliday or Bay

I had the pleasure of seeing Alvarez a lot in Lowell this season, don't be so quick to cast him off as nothing, he put up a great season in Lowell and
while he doesn't have the most impressive velocity, he was dominant and is a young lefty. It will be interesting to see how he progresses. I don't see
greatness for him, but he's a more valuable piece than Hunter Jones for sure.

"This is not a blockbuster. It's a value trade and a chance to get a guy with unfulfilled potential at a reasonable cost. I don't think we can
draw grand conclusions about our offseason, or the offseason in Major League Baseball, with this one transaction. It's just a small move, and I'm sure
that there will be increased activity with a lot of clubs once we get to the general managers' meetings." - Theo on the trade
But, HE'S going to be our replacement for Bay!!!111!! |

LarsinCharge wrote:You make a good point. But regardless of whether we consider him a platoon-player or a 4th outfielder, it boils down to the fact that, if Hermida is to stay on the roster, the other open outfield spot would need to be occupied by someone who can play CF. However, I don't think this roster construction issue is particularly troubling this early in the off-season. The team made a good deal in acquiring him; that's the important thing. |

Options, people, options. It's really early in the game of prep-for-next-season. If I remember right, the World Series ended three days ago. Instead of
trying to cast his role in stone, I think yahu has it about right. This is a low-risk high upside gamble, one that delivers a potential trading chip, some
insurance, and one more hitter with exceptional plate discipline who'll be appreciated for that skill in Boston. And while he may not play center field,
Reddick does and Drew also. It's a long way till the season starts and the trading action is just getting started.
As for his personality, not everyone in the world disembowels themselves publicly. Everyone is different. I found out many years ago that you can't judge a person by the noise level they generate.
Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. ~ Frederick Douglass
