"trading junk" -- Jose Alvarez is not junk.
We've traded a lot of young arms over the course of the past year; at least one of them will cause us regret down the road, I predict. |

He's 26. What kind of upside and potential do you think will be fulfilled playing every three or four days in Boston? I heard the same thing about WMP.

JD Drew may look like Trot Nixon next to this guy. Still, like the move...good bb rates and pretty decent pop although he will likely never fulfill his
potential.

I also thinks this means that Josh Reddick's days with the organization are numbered. Why block him otherwise?

Should also point out that Alvarez was Rule 5 eligible and Jones was holding a 40-man spot.

Moreover, he could be one of many things for the Sox, depending on how they view his future performance, and what other deals they are able to make: insurance in case they don't land a big fish platoon partner in LF bench OFer trade chip emergency depth, cut in ST if not used (unlikely) Reddick is a totally different player who can defend in center, and has many more years to grow. He also showed he wasn't ready to be in the majors yet. This acquisition actually protects Reddick from having to be the left half of a platoon or a bench player this year. Now they just need a right half (or a bona fide LFer) |

Wait, what???
This is the 5th of November, not the 1st of April. edit: I'm surprised they couldn't get more. This is the type of guy mid-market teams should take a chance on.
aminahyaquin: Alou is a 37 year old 7 time MVP with a .347 lifetime batting average and a world of hustle. he
can golden glove field in his sleep.
tGG: Alou is actually 42, has never won an MVP, has a .303 lifetime batting average, and is mediocre at best in the field. joshv02: But, other than that, you're wrong.

I would disagree. More like knocked Brian Anderson down on the depth chart. |

As long as he hasn't been acquired to be the starting left fielder then I don't see how anyone could dislike this trade. I can certainly understand
why you wouldn't get excited about it as Hermida has had ample opportunity and hasn't delivered on it and has shown he has trouble not getting hurt.
Basically, I look at it like the Sox got more potential back than they gave up so I'm good with it. No expectations though.

I'm with SoxSail on this. He could be a 4th OFer, he could be a trade chip, he could be a platoon partner.... He's an average corner outfielder with
subpar defense (who has some potential), and the Sox saw that he could be had for cheap, so they made the move. Don't think it really affects 2010 roster
construction going forward.

I see this as a hedge. Get a decent young outfielder, don't give up much, have more options next spring, especially if the price for Bay/Holliday isn't
right.

You read any Marlines beat writers, bloogers, fan comments on blogs and they all talk about how he is oafish, lazy, rather be somewhere else, etc. I still like the move and it may be unwarranted like it is with JD...just an even keel approach. We shall see which it is. |

Gammons article:
Now Hermida is 25, with four years in the big leagues and $2.25 million to build off in arbitration, and the Red Sox acquired him for minor league pitchers Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez. "We still think there's a good hitter in there," Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said.

Here is a link with a scouts notes that was the point of my post which is echoed in many other articles. Still, at the cost of Hunter Jones and Gonzales I do like taking the chance. Of course playing in front of 37k passionate fans 81x/year instead of 8k may ignite something as well

Hermida was the right fielder down here and is a butcher on defense in right field. He was switched to left this year and was doing a lot better in left at the
start of the year. When Maybin bombed at the start of the year he was switched back to right field to move Ross back to center. At the end of the year when
Mabin came back up Hermida could not get on the field as it was Coghlan, Maybin and Ross in the outfield. He is guy who the Marlins were trying to get to be
more aggressive earlier in the count because they thought he was to passive. I think he could be a lot better in Fenway rather than down here in Dolphin
stadium. Personality wise he is a lot more like J D than Youk. He has had a problem with being injured. He is a guy that looks like he could blossom but with
the Marlins he had worn out his welcome. I would be willing to go into the year with him in left field and hope that playing in front of a full house in a
smaller park will help with his fire. As far as him being a block for Josh Reddick I do not believe so as Reddick is a lot better athlete. I would have rather
had Ross than Hermida but Hermida is a better on base guy and still could have a higher ceiling.
