Buster Olney mentioned on Dale and Holley this was a guy Fla was going to non-tender, so the Sox were sniffing to get him.
A -- the next 37 days you are going to see a wave of non-tendered players like you've never seen before. General managers are thinking it's going to be between 75 and 100 guys. Guys like Jeremy Hermida. |

I like this move a lot. He will be 26 years old and coming into his prime.

It's an okay pick-up.
Career: .351/.441 v RHP .321/.376 v LHP -8.0 UZR/150 in 3400 innings in RF. SSS in CF and LF. Basically, an average hitter with below average defense. Calm down a bit, people. |

This is a pretty damn good move for a former top prospect for 2 players that we won't lose any sleep over trading.
I'll be there, watching the Sox representation of mid-rotation starters. -TheGoldenGreek33 on Casey Kelly

Zack Greinke, Jeremy Hermida, and Jeff Francouer were all supposed to go to Clemson the same year. What could have been.

I have always been an astute advocate of trading junk for fifth outfielders, as well.

TheGoldenGreek33 wrote: I can see your point Greek but he is very young with upside. Former top prospect for them and had an OPS of .870 as a 23 yr old. We didnt give up much and he is at the age where he could have a break out season like Ethier. Not saying he will but he could. Also this gives us a young cost controlled corner OF which gives us flexibility with Reddick. I dont know what the counter move is but we have a decent LF now with some upside. |

That .870 OPS came with an uncharacteristic .353 BABIP. His BABIP for 06-08-09 was .309-.310-.309. His OPS those three seasons: .700-.729-.740.

If the Sox lose out on Bay or a PTBNL then might we see a platoon of Hermida/Rocco?

amfox1 wrote:Hermida has been a favorite of mine for a while, so I love this acquisition......but I'm not sure he's the solution in LF for 2010 or that this discounts a signing of Bay/Holliday (or any other big LF bat acquisition) at all. Hermida looks a lot like a $3-4M lottery ticket for next year, albeit one with pretty good odds (again, I'm biased). Best case is that he does become the on-base machine and offensive power that made him one of the top prospects in the game a few years back, and that he does force his way into a starting job at some point. I just can't see the team relying on him out of the gate and forgoing any opportunity to add a Bay or a Holliday. The team may play that angle with Boras, of course. Perfect world I think you're looking at Hermida and Bay or Holliday splitting time between LF/DH in 2011 and beyond. Excerpt of BA's review of Hermida a few years ago: After he totaled just 16 homers in his first three pro seasons, Hermida's power showed up in 2005. Working with Double-A Carolina hitting coach Steve Phillips and roving instructor John Mallee, Hermida was able to add more lift to his swing and started to pull inside pitches for power. His slight frame continued to fill out. His biggest selling point, though, is a tremendous ability to control the strike zone. As his power increased and his reputation spread, Southern League pitchers routinely avoided throwing him strikes. To his credit, Hermida refused to expand his zone and piled up the third-highest walk total in the minors. For the first time as a pro, he walked more than he struck out. He also runs well and has been caught stealing just 10 times in 77 career chances. His arm is average.
Madness is like gravity....all you need is a little push.

Does this move give us a little insight as to what the Red Sox feel as what their chances are in re-signing Bay?
