4 yrs $72MM would be good, maybe with a vesting or mutual option for a 5th. For those of you who, like myself, lack math skills, thats an AAV of $18MM per season. More than Burnett but less than Sabathia. Seems very fair.

I would love to see us re-up with Beckett. Then if we can add a Lackey type for reasonable money(I doubt it will happen), we would be set. I think Papi has a
better year in 2010. His wrist is going to be better. I don't think he will be the Papi of old, but he will be better..
Thanks for welcoming me before guys...been out of town. |

Despite his documented inconsistency, Beckett has still been worth nearly 17 wins the last 3 years and has shown no sign of decline. We know there will be the occasional back/oblique/blister issue lingering, but I do not see any reason why he wouldn't remain a highly effective pitcher into his early 30's. |

And for those of you who want Papi to lose a ton of weight, I don't understand why that's really all that important. Sure, we want him fit, but as long as he is limber and strong, the weight should be working in his favor, at least to a point. Certainly, asking him to lose 40 lbs is a bit much, as that would put him around 200 -- he's listed at 230 -- which for a 6'4" guy is pretty darn tiny. Youkilis' BMI (calculated through listed height/weight) is actually higher than Ortiz', and while that's kind of a crackpot way of measuring a body, I think it, combined with the eye test tells us that just a few pounds would do it. |

As much as I think the odds of a deal for King Felix are poor for the Sox at this point (and I would love to be very wrong on that), if such a deal were made
this winter, the Sox could deal Beckett to fill some of the holes they just made in the farm, or for a left fielder and a prospect or two to fill Bay's
spot, if he or an alternative is not signed in free agency.
Would Theo do that? Pr would he rather line up with a rotation of Hernandez, Lester, Beckett, Matsuzaka, Buchholz/Wake, and go for it with Beckett pitching his brains out in a walk year and the Sox still having the option to sign him after the 2010 season? |

Well, if I were Epstein I would want the latter. I really do not understand why anyone would propose trading Beckett. The Sox could use another top-flight
starter and if they got one why then would they give up one? Not much would have been accomplished.
Sure, Beckett is only elite part of the time, but he still has one of the best records in baseball. There just are not very many truly elite players in baseball right now. So maybe the ones we rank as Very Good, like Beckett, are, when compared to their peers, better than we think. Furthermore, with Beckett in his walk year his value will be down. It is the worst time to be trading him. I would prefer than he perform for his next contract for the Sox. |

Jim Calis on Dustin Richardson in a chat on ESPN today:
Vin (Mesa, AZ) I have been to a few AFL league games this year and spoke to one scout who said that when I see Dustin Richardson I should think "left handed Justin Masterson, the relief pitcher version." Accurate in your view? Jim Callis (2:52 PM): I could see that. Richardson can be a reasonably reliable reliever while relying primarily on his fastball. |

I unfortunately don't really have the time to do an end-to-end dataset collection and analysis but figured I'd put it up and if it gets a life I'll contribute further as I can. Perhaps it needs a thread or perhaps it is just background for this discussion. Fangraphs has (and I am not sure exactly how this is calculated or how exact/predictive it is, appears to be derivative of Cameron's win values?) created a statistic that measures value by pitch type. I wanted to look at fastball performance for the Sox pitchers this year, because anecdotally and from my own observations (which are notoriously untrustworthy) it appears that the Sox are being killed by fastball overuse. But of course, there is also fastball execution. I wanted to see if there were some way to shed a little light on this. I think everyone gets it, so without further ado:
Again, there are a lot of contiguous arguments in here, and there is a lot of noise inherent in this set. Some items I noted, such as Lester's FB value drop-off being balanced by his improvement with the cutter. Nevertheless, all things being equal, that is a pretty damning trend. And it seems a bit unlikely that an entire group of pitchers could suddenly lose effective fastballs. This leads me to believe that opposing hitters are sitting red, or perhaps sign-stealing has become more prevalent/effective. No doubt there are other answers. If anyone has any more insight into this I would love to see it and discuss. That said, and keeping it relevant; if one were to argue that these numbers are representative of a pitcher's effectiveness with the pitch that the Sox view as paramount in importance, one might argue that Beckett is tradeable. One might also make the argument that Papelbon is absolutely headed in the wrong direction and should be dealt while his reputation is as good as it is.
Just wanted to say that Singer has disallowed me from posting new topics ever since my Freddy Guzman thread. He seemed very upset about my opinions and was
almost hostile in his responses. He must have been upset about something else, I don't know, it was strange. Anyway, apparently he has deemed me unworthy
of starting new discussions. Do I mind? I do mind, the Dude minds. This will not stand, ya know, this aggression will not stand, man.

Considering they're in the AL, and play a good chunk of their games in the new Yankee Stadium, Camden Yards, and Tropicana Field... I'd call that average. And even if a lot of the home/away variance is luck, I'm still not very impressed by #3 in runs scored overall, considering the park, division, and league the Sox play in. The Sox scored 872 runs; the AL East averaged 826 runs. Plus, with Pedroia and Ellsbury being the only regulars under 30, we should assume the offensive production will decline, absent a change. |

I think we all saw the problem offensively was consistency. There were stretches in the 2nd half of the season in which the entire offense just went dead, both
on the road and even some at home. The team had a huge hole at SS, a mediocre 3B, an inconsistent DH, and a CF who while has improved a lot still isn't a
top level bat. Combined with inconsistent SP in the 2nd half it was not a great situation. The team needs to improve the consistency and right now the way to
do that is lock up the LF position, figure something out at SS, and find another bat off the bench to play some DH and give other regulars some time off

Man this guy would look great with the Paw Sox next year. Plays multiple positions, provides some depth......he'd get to remain in the same organization
as his brother.
link Edgar Gonzalez Wednesday said he would opt for free agency after the Padres dropped him from their 40-man roster and outrighted him to Triple-A Portland.

If you're serious 1) do you think Bay's agent will let him sign for fewer dollars per year than Holliday, esp with the same org? 2) What do you do with
Big Papi and his $12.5 mil salary? Personally I think Papi and Lowell will have good, if not very good 2010 season (barring injury). Both are essentially
playing for contracts and that seems to push players' performance just a bit more. Ditto for Beckett.

who cares what you do with Papi and his 1 year deal at 12.5M... The Sox already got their money's worth out of his contract; if they don't feel
he's the guy they need in their lineup (which I would agree with) and they can get someone they feel is better then they can eat that contract. He might
not be happy about it, but he'll get his opportunities throughout the year. If he dominates, then he'll force his way back into the lineup maybe
pushing Lowell out.
