The Venezuelan Winter League and the Mexican Pacific League get underway today. Red Sox player stats will be updated daily (when available) on the Fall-Winter page this off-season. Bookmark it. Here are some initial placements:
Venezuelan Winter League 2009 (October 9 - December 21)
Jose Alvarez - Anzoategui
Enrique Gonzalez - Guaira
Felix Doubront - Magallanes
Yeiper Castillo - Zulia
Juan Apodaca - Caracas
Word is that Doubront will get the opening day start for Magallanes, and that he's on a 30 inning limit for the season. Gonzalez and Apodaca are eligible for free agency this November. A few Sox players may participate in the Venezuelan parallel league, and some could see some time with their respective VWL clubs, including Leandro Marin, Armando Zerpa, Nestor Lastreto, and Heiker Meneses.
Mexican Pacific League 2009 (October 9 - December 30)
Angel Chavez - Guasave
Gil Velazquez - Mexicali
Both are free agent eligible. Velazquez is presently in Anaheim with the Sox as an emergency backup.
DWL/CWL/PRWL
The Dominican Winter League will go from October 16 - December 21 this year. Rumor is that Mark Wagner will play for Cibao. There likely wll be other Sox players participating in the DWL - we'll find out more next week. Jose Capellan is likely to pitch for Este. The Colombian Winter League will go from October 23 - December 30. Randy Consuegra has participated in the past, and there is a chance that Derrick Loop might pitch in the CWL this year. The Puerto Rican Winter League will run from early November to early January 2010. Look for Jose Vaquedano, Jorge Jimenez, and Iggy Suarez as possible returnees this year.
