From Keith Law's final entry
about the Fall League (mostly insider):
I get a lot of e-mails asking about whether Austin Romine is the Yankees' catcher of the future. He has plenty of arm, and his receiving is adequate, but I'm not sure about the bat. His swing works fine, but he has a big stride and a pretty healthy leak, getting his weight on his front foot early and closing his stance late, so his balance isn't great and he doesn't get as much power into contact as he could. He's still just 20 years old and was young for his level this season, but he has some work to do as a hitter before we can talk about him as successor to Jorge Posada. Also, Greek, you and LaPorta know that the hip and toe are not the same thing, right? |

Looks like the Reds and Pirates have a pending deal to transfer Hi-A Afilliates. The Reds will take Lynchburg and The Pirates will move their team to McKechnie Field in Bradenton and play in the FSL... http://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20091030/ARTICLE/910301045 Pinkerton Baseball |

Good stuff from new BA article on Rockies 1st round pick Tyler Matzek:
Matzek's first outing in the instructional league began against outfielder Conor Jackson, who was leading off each inning as he tried to work his way back from the Valley Fever that ended his season on May 11. True, Jackson hadn't competed regularly, but he does have 484 games and 1,624 at-bats on his major league resume.Eerily reminiscent of: Harry Hogge: What do you know about stock car racing?imdb.com

Former Minnesota Twins infielder Luis Rivas was shot in the left leg while attending a friend's funeral in Venezuela, and will miss the remainder of the Venezuelan winter season. According to his winter league team, Navegantes de Magallanes, Rivas -- who played last year for the Iowa Cubs and last played in the majors in 2008 with the Pittsburgh Pirates -- was shot during an apparent robbery attempt. He will undergo surgery and it's possible his injury is career-threatening.ESPNI |

It is, actually. On the grand scheme of things, it is. It's called journalism.

Buffs, I think you have the wrong thread in mind, you posted that in the minor league discussion... seems fair game to me.
That being said, sure Venezuela has some rough spots... what else is new? |

Nope, I had the right forum, jspearl. A lot of teams are shuffling their 40-man right now (affecting minor- and major-leaguers), in addition to just a lot of
other general moves creating news. Also more general news like this morning:
link Reds Minor League pitcher Jose Marmolejo will serve a 40-game suspension next year after Major League Baseball disciplined him for what it called the use and possession of a prohibited performance-enhancing substance. The point is there are tons of things going on right now to talk about at the minor league level and it's not interesting for others, including myself, to check in to this (or any other forum) expecting news or intelligent discussion and find something else. Pat et al typically have tons of good information & insight on the minors, just want to keep the discussion on those points. Have a good weekend, y'all. Cheers, Lou

Until there is a general rule V discussion thread, I'm going to throw one name out there in this thread, as someone who I don't THINK will get any Rule
V buzz....
Matt Torra - SP - D'Backs system Below, is a little work I did for a friend. Matt was unprotected by the D'Backs, and is now eligible to be selected in the Rule V. 2005 draft - 1st selection in supplementary round 1 - 31st overall Of starting pitchers with at least 120 IP in 2009, Matt gave up the fewest walks in the Southern League, and was in the top 15 of all minor leaguers with at least 120 IP. Matt led all minor leaguers in innings pitched in 2009. Matt led the Southern League in games started, complete games, and shutouts. Of pitchers with at least 120 IP, Matt was 3rd in the Southern League with a WHIP of 1.22, and in the top 15 of minor leaguers with at least 120 IP. 5.2 innings pitched per start in 2007 5.2 innings pitched per start in 2008 6.1 innings pitched per start in 2009 In addition to his BB, ERA, and WHIP trending down over the past three years, his innings pitched, HR/FB, and GB% have been consistently at the top of his league. Four quality pitches - Matt throws a curve ball, change up, and four-seamer, that all compliment his primary pitch, a darting two-seamer. Durability- Matt has pitched 496 innings over the past three seasons, tops among minor league pitchers. Matt has a strong build at 6'3 230 pounds. Consistency- Matt's performance over the past three years has been remarkably consistent, and shows a positive trend in major pitching statistics. Value - Matt offers tremendous value and upside. He WILL fit right into the mid-back end of a Major League rotation. Matt has the ability to pitch deep into games, saving bullpen arms that are seemingly overused when many 3rd, 4th, and 5th starters pitch. A tremendous ground ball and strike out percentage ratio, relative to fly balls and line drives will only increase his value with a major league defense behind him, and his continual ability to keep the ball off the sweet spot and in the park. Again, just a bit of information I compiled for a friend. I think that Torra will be a name that may not get some buzz around the Rule V time, but probably should. I think he would be able to help a big league club next year. |
