Do these team salary projections include our 2010 $9mm SS who's currently playing for the Cardinals?

Another interesting item from the L.A. Times:
"[the Angels] could also look to Brandon Wood for help. The team's top power prospect, the infielder will be out of options next spring, meaning the Angels must keep him on their big league roster or risk losing him to a waiver claim." He's a player the Sox have long coveted - and one the Angels seem to not have confidence in. There could be a deal here - the Angels also need bullpen help - or it would be a hell of a waiver claim. |

Here's a link to the L.A. Times piece talking about Wood:
http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-angels27-2009oct27,0,2567240.story As for the Sox and Wood they've been linked in various rumors about attempted trades. If memory serves the Sox tried to get him in 07 and 08 but the Angels wouldn't move him. Those two front offices don't seem to play well together. |

All this makes me think thay may choose to let Figgins walk, not that he'll be an easy sign even so. I like the Josh Johnson idea, and I think the Sox have the pieces to pry him from the Marlins. |

Guidas gets his Brandon Wood trade talk in all the right places. Seriously though, Cafardo did at least mention Wood (albeit in a virtual throwaway line) last month. |

I wouldn't doubt that Wood has been mentioned in speculation by clowns like Cafardo who don't really understand the Red Sox or the the kinds of players
they go for, and also just about every shortstop in baseball has been thrown out over the past 3 years as possible "solution" to Boston's
revolving door.

Actually if you look at Wood's minor league numbers, think projectability (the way GMs do) and believe he can play average to slightly above average SS and
average 3rd base, you can see why rumors have been out there regarding Sox interest:
http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=6592&position=3B/SS A player with a minorleague OBA at above .350, OPS at around .900 who is still young and supposedly plays average to a tick above ave defense. Don't get me wrong, I don't have Theo on speed dial and the "rumors" I've read have probably been in the Globe, Herald and from Gammo (who I admit seems to be making it up as he goes lately), but the numbers jibe with what they like. Personally, if I can do a trade with the Angels, I see if I can get Kendrick and stick him back on first. |

These are some truly priceless quotes from Bay's agent, per Bradford at WEEI (link):
"I think the only defensive statistic that I know for sure that is easily measurable is outfield assists and errors committed, and Jason is just the third outfielder in major league history to lead the league in outfield assists while not creating an error all season, the last guy being Carl Yastrzemski," the agent said.Wow. |

I couldn't agree more MVPedroia. I like Bay, but I only need to think back to one of his lame-butt swings on a slider to let him go.

MVPedroia15 wrote:I know we're a prospect board, but can we stop with planning to replace a middle of the lineup bat with a AA kid who barely makes the BA league's top 20 list? He may well end up a nice MLB outfielder, and perhaps hit 20 homers some day. But so far he's a kid overmatched in AAA and the MLB. Planning him as the solution and therefore foregoing any replacement with known quantities is not the way to go. The only place I think such a thought process might fit is at SS, where you're dealing with a #9 hitter, there's a built in existing stop-gap, and projecting Iglesias to replace the existing option isn't too difficult. Holliday will be the Sox's 2010-2015 left fielder. |

Staying with the LF topic who all could be had in a potential trade? I dont think we should limit the options to LF only. I would think Drew with his age would
be an option to switch. Covering less ground might not be a bad thing for him. Hawpe is out there but a brutal defender. His home/away splits are pretty
similar which was shocking to me. I still come back to Holliday. He will be 30 next spring and a 5 year deal would take him to 34. He had such a SSS in Oakland
and got hot the last month he was there. Also its not like he had any help at all in that lineup.
As far as improving our D Beltre is the obvious answer but would he even come here? If i remember correctly he likes the west coast and it might be hard to get him away from it. One good thing I think Figgens stays, the Dodgers have Blake, SD cant afford him and the Giants have Sandavol but he could slide to 1B. So the west coast might not be an option this time around. SS is tricky as well. I think Lowrie would do well and would be average in the field and above average at the plate, but is he healthy? I think we sign/trade for a defensive guy and hope Lowrie is healthy. Maybe an Adam Everett would be an option. I would rather go down the Lowrie road than trade valuable chips to acquire a guy like Stephen Drew. |

I hope to heck not. Homeboy can't hit the good fastballs consistently from many accounts and I am not really impressed with his three year spilts against AL teams, esp in their parks: http://espn.go.com/mlb/pl...d=5940&type=batting3 K rate and so-so defense aside, Bay has proven he can play in the AL East and play under the pressures of Fenway. I'm not sure which way the Sox go - Bay-Holliday-OtherFreeAgent-Trade or even someone like Nava or Gathright to start the season, but personally I'm hoping against Matt Holliday. |

Um Guidas... did you actually look at the splits? He's struggled against 3 AL teams (LAA: 813 OPS, SEA: 700 OPS,
TOR: 400 OPS). Against all the other teams he has an 880 OPS or above.
Seriously... you just made a stronger point for him then against him. Also, if you are going to look at splits, please use Baseball Reference. As to your point about power stuff hurts him... he drops 55 OPS points against power pitchers versus average pitchers where as Jason Bay drops 107 OPS points... yeah.
