Like Callis said, the potential is similar, and it wouldn't surprise anyone here (I assume) to see people talking about Ryan like they're talking about Heyward this time next year. I just hope they're still talking about him as a Red Sox farm hand.

While this is all true about Heyward V Westmoreland, I wouldn't view it as a knock on Westmoreland in any sense. Westmoreland had to deal with shorter
seasons in High School, a shoulder surgery and simply being drafted as an 18 year old instead of a 17 year old.

This is obviously quite the compliment, but it's not like Callis said they were comparable prospects in any way, shape, or form, regardless of the
similarity of their ceilings.

I really don't see the Sox trading Westmoreland. As a local boy, he has far more value to the Red Sox than any other team. This is particularly true
because of the local climate which generally isn't prolific in the world of baseball prospect production. Unlike Rocco, this isn't the one that got
away.

How does being from RI make him a better value to the Sox than to another team? Has it been proven somewhere that local products drafted by their home team
have higher success rates than non-local products? It's grossly exaggerated and it really has no value whatsoever.
Westy is a legit prospect; a top five in almost every organization as a 19 YO. He could have been from Sioux Falls, SD and nothing would be different. The Sox opinion on him has nothing to do with where he's from and everything to do with the fact that he's really, really good. And no, he's not going anywhere. |

I think lcbf was referring to PR value as opposed to prospect value. Or perhaps more accurately, PR value on top of prospect value.

Exactly asf, I thought that was rather obvious. As a local boy who looks, smells & sounds like your next door neighbor, he's going to be enormously
popular. The fact that he's articulate and seems to handle media well only enhances that. Can you say "Face of the Red Sox".

Do you really think PR value changes the Sox outlook on whether to trade a player? I do, but not because he's a local kid... it's because he's a
player that needed 2 things to forgo his college career (Money and the Red Sox - 1 of the 2 wasn't enough)
This is completely hypothetical because there is no way for me or any one else on the outside to know for sure. However, I do think there is something to the speculation that Westmoreland (and Tazawa for that matter) only wanted to sign with the Red Sox and because of that the Sox cannot trade him, this early or risk future negotiations with players down the line... If you are in position where certain amature players only want to go to your team, beit from the US, Japan or Latin America, then you really need to treat those players differently once signed. I dont really look at it as handcuffing yourself as those players are almost a bonus in that you wouldn't have had them in the first place... This isn't to say you can never trade a Tazawa or RWM, however you need to be sure the return is worth the potential future ramifications if you feel there may be some... if the Sox could get Pujols for those two; then the sh!tstorm would be worth it. This may be a bit exagerated, but hopefully my over-all point is there... i dont think RWM gets traded, but I don't think it's PR from |

No, it isn't hypothetical. The Sox leveraged Pedro's nationality, Manny's goofyness, Ortiz' loveability, Daisuke's nationality, and
Damon/Jacoby's hunkiness. Its smart business. Westmoreland, like Greek said, could be from Tripoli and it wouldn't impact his value as a
prospect/player. However, since he is from RI, he has more marketability here in NE. Just like Flutie, Framingham Lou, Dropkick Murphy's, Tony C, The
Departed, or Boondock Saints.
People love "their own". Simple as that. For the Sox, that translates into dollars. And Westmoreland has that wonderful verbal NTC, so he's going to put on a Sox uniform at some point. And I hope to hell Phil Hughes does, too (as a starter, of course). |

Curll84 wrote:Once again, no he doesn't. We've confirmed this with his family. Gammons likely misunderstood that the Sox called the Westmoreland family while the rumors were swirling to say that they had no plans to trade him, but there is no "verbal no-trade clause".

Q + A with lowellspinners.com ... again, this should eliminate any likelihood of a written, verbal, handshake, or wink wink NTC w/ Westmoreland (link):
