"With Bryan Petersen batting, Jose Iglesias steals (1) 2nd base. Jose Iglesias out at 3rd, catcher Jonathan Lucroy to third baseman Taylor Green"
There is no caught stealing in the box. Did the ball get away from the catcher and Jose attempt 2? Either way, the stolen base was good to see, I have only seen one writeup that indicated he had speed (plus speed if I recall). There just isn't much info on him out there. |

lcbf, it reads to me like Iglesias was going, the ball got away, and he tried for two. He'd get credit for the steal, but wouldn't get banged for the
CS. Since he was thrown out, there wouldn't be a passed ball or wild pitch.

That is about the way I figured it. I was really happy to see the stolen base or even an attempt. A speed tool would come in handy.

BA Scout's Diary: AFL Still A Great
Secret
The AFL began in 1992 and in it has produced more than 1,700 Major Leaguers, including 141 All-Stars-38 in 2009 alone. Six MLB most valuable players are AFL alumni: Jason Giambi, Ryan Howard, Justin Morneau, Dustin Pedroia, Albert Pujols and Jimmy Rollins. Three Cy Young winners played in the AFL: Chris Carpenter, Roy Halladay and Brandon Webb. But sometimes scouts feel like they are the only people in attendance at an AFL game. There may be a few agents, some girlfriends, player family members and a senior citizen who took a wrong turn somewhere, but often it feels like that's it. The stands are often 90-percent empty. |

Why is the AFL restricted to so few teams? With the glut of SS and other positions on this year's rosters, it seems like each AFL team could have fewer MLB
affiliates. If it's cause of too few pitchers, I can think of a few Sox hurlers who could have joined (Hottovy, Bowden, KJohnson). And fewer affiliates
might mean more attendance by a generally Rabid Sox fan base.

SoxSail wrote:You really think that the reason the AFL doesn't get fans is because there are too few players from each organization? Look, nobody's going to travel for the AFL. Think about it - who travels for the minor leagues in general? The fans that go to Spring Training almost entirely go to MLB ST, not the minor league complexes. Not many people plan trips around traveling to see their team's AA affiliate. It costs money to run a team. It's not like there's any revenue coming in for this. Given the crowd described, it sounds like most of the people in attendance may even get comped - players' families, scouts, etc. don't pay to see games. They're not getting advertisers, and I'm sure concessions barely make a profit, if they even have them. From a player perspective, the fact is that the regular season is pretty long anyway. Think about the season that you play in high school - 3 months, plus 2 months of summer ball maybe? And even at that, you're playing what, 3 games a week? Playing every day from March to September is grueling. Looking at the pitchers you mentioned, Bowden threw 142 innings and KJ threw 113, although the reason it was that low was because he got his head bashed in in AAA, so many of those were high-stress innings. The point is to keep the AFL a league for "elite" prospects, for the most part at least. The more teams you add, the more diluted the pool gets, etc. I'd definitely like to head out to Arizona for a week someday for the AFL, but I have no doubt that I'm in the very, very small minority there.

14 Fastballs (93.29 Avg., 94.7 Peak) - all appear to be 4-seamers.
3 Sliders 1 Changeup Seemed to lose control of the fastball at times on the right side of the plate (his perspective) against both righties and lefties. He gave up two hits, both on groundballs. This info is being gleaned from here. |

Is that a shot of SSS your sipping or did you not follow him after his promotion to Portland? He hasn't missed a beat.
edit: It's also important to note he allowed 3 SB's last night and a PB.

Thanks td. When I saw Richardson this summer before his promotion, he was consistently throwing 90-92 (on the Bowie stadium gun). I wonder if he really has
jumped his velocity in the fall (which would be surprising after a full season) or whether it's a matter of gun variability. Every mph is important for
him, if he can control it. Or maybe his command issues were a matter of trying to throw harder. After all, a winter league IS a time to work on things, and
trying to consolidate command while throwing harder would be something useful for him to try to accomplish.
As for Expo, 3 SBA allowed and a CS, so his throwout % was 25, not far from where he's been sitting in of course the smallest SS. I must admit, the PB are puzzling to me because when I saw him with Salem and Portland he was catching everything. A function of pitchers he doesn't know perhaps? But again, I don't worry much about fall league stats - it could be loss of focus after a long season.

No, not the former. If it were a "shot of SSS" he was sipping then that would imply he was drawing conclusions on Expo based on that one game. He
wasn't. He was simply expressing the fact that he was happy Expo had his first good game this fall. There is nothing wrong with referencing a players
production - even if it is over only a few at bats.
