Province's inning was 1-2-3: K, GO, FO. Richardson entered with no outs, men on 1st and 2nd and went K, K, go. Next inning went GO, infield single, K, GO.
Bierd was pretty good too:
1st: go, go, go
2nd: pop out (PO), PO, PO
3rd: go, BB, (cs), K

Iglesias had 2 assists and a putout as well. There was a double to CF that was "deflected" by Kalish, whatever that means.

Sibby Sisti wrote:Yeah, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. The Sox won't put themselves in a position where they're relying on a combination of a FOB 19-yo, and a balky wristed Lowrie for 162 games. They're going to bring in a Gonzalez or other veteran who can make the plays, and who will hopefully give them at least a .310 OBP. If Iglesias is that good, he can sit at Pawtucket and work on his hitting, learn the area and the language, etc. Heck, he's never even lived in a capitalist country before, so even if the baseball is there, it's going to be a little bit of time before he's completely ready to go. More likely, his hitting isn't ready for him to be MLB protection yet, and he starts below AAA. |

Really tempted to head South to Arizona to see the kids play. The rain is moving in here in Oregon and the snow may not be far behind. There are an endless
number of places to hideout/camp on the way down and it's a spectacular trip working your way through the Great Basin, around the Grand Canyon, over and off of the Coconino plateau and
into the upper Sonoran desert. I think the Sox picked a good
group to send on down to the AFL. Haven't seen Kalish or Exposito play or Iglesias, of course. This would be a great opportunity.

Do it, Norm...
EDIT: And bring your camera. An action shot or vid of Iglesias would almost be too much to handle.

I think Sibby was more or less talking about Jose and the fact that no other SS has taken hold as the "SS of the future." I dont think he was trying
to say Inglesias should be considered an option for the big club next season. I am just as excited as the rest of you about him but I dont think next year is
realistic. We dont need to rush a player up that has questions with the bat because not many players learn plate discipline at the MLB level.

SoxSail wrote:I should have been more complete in my posting. By "there doesn't appear to be anyone ahead of him at SS in the organization", I meant that he appears to be on a fast track to Boston, not that he'll compete with Lowrie for a starting position. SP has him penciled in at AA Portland to begin his career, skipping over the lower minors where most 19 yr olds are initially assigned. So the FO must have some confidence in his ability to perform at a high level. SP has Yamaica Navarro, previously our top rated shortstop, at 3B to make room for Iglesias at SS. Also, I don't think his lack of knowledge of the area or the language is an impediment. Most teams have an abundance of Spanish speaking staff. His ascendence through the ranks will depend upon his ability to handle higher level pitching and his continued stellar fielding prowess. |

I was trying to think of something more constructive to write than what I feel, which is unmitigated elation and unfounded optimism based solely on one game,
plus a few scouting reports about his defense. Totally agree with JDB and Sibby, except for
"So the FO must have some confidence in his ability to perform at a high level." We should remember SP's 2010 projections are usually based on guesstimates at the FO's thoughts, and not their actual thoughts. ADD: All that being said, as the season wore on, many RS fans seemed eager to get a vacuum at SS, even if he couldn't hit. If Iglesias were a MLB-ready ground ball black hole... legitimately...? Of course you're right ASF.

That attitude would last only until (if it happens) Lowrie regains health and re-emerges as a potent offensive threat who can be an average defensive SS who
makes virtually all the routine plays. Then I guarantee you that the overwhelming majority of fans here and elsewhere would want Lowrie to be the starting SS,
unless/until Iglesias shows some decent offensive tools of his own.

Exposito is the only Sox position player in the Mesa starting lineup tonight. Iglesias Watch gets a night off.

Worth noting that Exposito is the DH as well. Wouldn't surprise me if he caught tomorrow.

Richie Lentz goes 2.0 inn so far. 1H, 3K and 0 BB. This fall I hope Lentz makes the turn and can get the ball over the plate.

Iglesias has a home run and a walk in his first two plate appearances of the day. Kalish with a sac fly and a fly out to center so far.

Uhh, well, Kalish has a Sac Fly in 2 PA's, while Iglesias has a walk and a 2- run homer in his two
SP beat me to it. Maybe Dillard meant "Can't Hit". Kalish walks then caught stealing, while Iglesias HBP. Puts the new SS at 3/5 with 2BB, HBP, a 2B and a HR.

Nice offensive outing so far today from Iglesias. I know its not much right now, but any offense is certainly a great sign this early
