For me, Paps has been a great player for us, but it is time to move on, his salary demands will be huge again and I would rather see us use the money on a little less ego.

I know it has been said, but that 0-2 Pitch was just terrible. My 9 year old son said, wth was that when he threw it.

Time to strap some C4 onto this roster and set the timer to go off 3 weeks from now.

So papelbon finally might fucking learn that throwing a pitch at 94 doesn't matter if its the only pitch you throw and in the same location. his junk
peripherals warned us this was coming. now Theo, get us a hitter and trade paps for it. PLEASE

It's extremely unlikely to happen given that both moves would have to happen via a trade, but can you imagine if Theo acquired both Gonzalez and Hernandez
this offseason? Why the fuck not?

ancientsoxfogey wrote: Amen. Listening to Papelbon talk about his contract in the offseason will be annoying, but he's still the best pitcher in the bullpen hands down (notwithstanding the terrible 0-2 pitch to Aybar). I'd take him in the 9th any day over Bard. If he's a true competitor, he will use this experience to work real hard in the spring to build up his offspeed stuff again. Part of it has to come from Farrell putting the pressure on him to use the offspeed stuff. The offense hit .158 in the series. Other than the Papelbon disaster, the pitching staff pitched well enough to sweep a playoff series. |

templeUsox wrote: Not sure I'm quite this angry at him, but I doubt it matters much.....I'd be willing to bet that this was his last outing as a Red Sox. Not that I think today is the reason why he's on the outs, but as I said in a previous thread I think he's a big chip they can use to acquire a big bat. In the end, the lack of production from our batting order sealed our fate. On to the offseason.....

I have to get on a flight to LA of all places right now. This fucking sucks.
Fuck you, CB Bucknor. Fuck you, Jonathan Papelbon. Fuck you, Red Sox "offense". Fuck me, for another offseason come much too early. Congratulations to the Angels, who were the better team. My rooting choices are the HankeeDamons, the WhinyScioscias, the TorreMannys and the PhilliePedros? Good grief. |

This year, the Angels really were the better team.
At least we didn't tire them out too much ... let's hope this playoff season can be salvaged even a small amount by seeing the Yankees lose. |

Second would be watching the Torre beat up on the Yankees. I like the Phillies a little better, but watching Torre take down his successor would be poetic justice. Unfortunately Manny will get to tag along for the ride. |

Most unfeeling team I've seen in years. Too many of those faces in the dugout didn't have any spark or fury like in years past. I for one felt like this was the fatest team we've had in a long time. Too rich, too uncaring. Enjoy your early vacation guys, since that's what so many of you obviously wanted. (Note, it was clear there were exceptions playing their heart out in Pedroia, Youkilis, etc. Just over all, just a lazy, fat, old team. Where's the hunger?) Yeah, and so long to Paps for sure. Have fun in the glue factory. |

The fact of the matter is that their best beat our best. That is little comfort right now. I feel like I have been kicked in the gut. But we will be back in
2010 and we will be back even stronger, that I believe with all of my heart.

I never thought I could hate a team so much to actually root for the Yankees in the playoffs, so congrats Angels?
Why would we ever PH for Varitek? I mean, what if we PH for him, and it goes to extras, and vic martinez gets eaten by
dinosaurs? We'd have to use the emergency catcher.

I'm starting to think for the money and years I would be more happy with Abreu than Bay or Holiday. We would make an ideal number 3 behind Jacoby and
Pedroia, and then Victor could protect Youk. Plus, L/R/L/R/S would make Tito's job easier with the lineup.

People talk about blowing up the team, but it's tough to blow it up when there are guys coming back next year that we seemingly can't get rid of, and
who are going to encumber the roster so that we have almost no choice but have them there and hope they perform the way we'd like. It would be a lot easier
to blow up the team after next year.
With that in mind, is there a corner OF we can acquire on a 1-year contract next year (or impending FA) that would be a reasonable fit in LF and would allow us to compete? That way we can evaluate whether guys like Paps, MDC, Beckett, and Lowrie can upgrade their play next year, have another minor league year to evaluate what the real chances are for some of our top, especially upper-level prospects, and have a grand, both short- and long-term reinvigoration strategy after 2010. shoosh, seeing your post after mine hit the board here, maybe Abreu is the answer, if he'll take another 1-year contract.
