Worst of all, Nick Green isn't available to pitch tonight.

The Sox defense has been particularly pitiful tonight.

BTW, that's a better job of blocking the plate than Tek has EVER done. That's a skill Varitek is particularly lacking in.

Do they try to steal a few outs with Lackey? Does it matter at this point? Regardless, it's time to start drinking (5:15pm local time)

Well, someone is going to get hit. Probably Ellsbury.

And RR very clearly didn't mean to hit him. He missed up and to the right on 7 of 8 pitches, culminating in the Hunter HBP.

AMarshal2 wrote:No way. Tek is awful at blocking the plate because 1) he crouches right over the plate, unlike what Martinez did there, which is going up the third base line and 2) he's very poor at receiving throws and making a tag, for whatever reason.. I have absolutely no recollection of Tek ever staving off a run by blocking the the plate and that's something I would remember. Edit: Actually, I remember one time. Against Jose Reyes in 2006.

That was the first time I ever saw Orsillo acknowledge a breaking ball while doing PBP. Maybe he just sleepwalks through the regular season. I honestly thought
he wasn't able to recognize one pitch from another.

Terrible effort for the Red Sox tonight. They can't afford to make lack efforts like Lowell and Gonzalez did on their throws and count on umpires like
Buckner to make the right call. Also, if Lowell was in position to catch Bay's throw, rather than about 4 feet in front of the bag the Red Sox get out of
the 7th inning with no runs.
Let's hope Buckner brings his seeing eye dog tomorrow night as he is the homeplate umpire. Also, MLB should equip him with a earpiece so that they can get someone in the TV booth to make the right call as those calls tonight weren't even close and he still got them wrong. Red Sox bats also need to wake up.
