Veteran Member Posts: 267 09/30/09 4:01 PM	Bit of an update (sorry wanted to put the post up quick so I could listen and others could check it out): I only caught tail end, but its one of the first times I've heard Theo talk pretty candidly on the radio. I will admit I have not listened to WEEI as much this season as I used to. And I know very little about Sportshub other than its rivaling WEEI for the top Boston sports radio station. But, the guys got a really good conversation going, where Theo pretty much schooled them on...well....everything? Main part of the discussion I caught was Theo's defense of JD Drew. You really get a good picture of the way Theo views running a baseball team. I know we all hear and talk about how much of the Front Office strategy revolves around paying heavy attention to certain statistics (OPS, OBP, WHIP, etc) and paying less attention to the most juicy statistics (RBIs, HR, BA, ERA, etc.). Theo baited the guys into discussing JD Drew by saying "Hey, I thought you guys were going to bring up how JD Drew has the second highest OPS of all AL Outfielders?" Theo pretty much went on to destroy them. Despite getting a good conversation going, the Sportshub guys sounded like morons. They also asked Theo if Varitek "learned Chinese in order to speak w/ Dice K on the mound". Theo went on to reply "I didn't know we acquired Yao Ming".

It is amazing how strongly the media here is going to cling to their JD Drew narrative no matter what happens.

I can see their point regarding defense, but without stats, they have no idea whether a guy is hitting .270 or .300 over the course of a year. "Ever notice how most Mac users are skinny? Veteran Member Posts: 972 09/30/09 6:46 PM Veteran Member	I'll admit to not having a clue as to why people do this. Can't get into their skin at all, not even a little. Drew is not loud and not demonstrative, almost shy. He doesn't set himself on fire when he fails and that may gall people. He may not live for baseball only, and that's fine. What he does do is deliver a very high level offensive game year in and year out, and a good glove in a difficult right field. I hope he stays hot through the playoffs but I'm not fooling myself. Rookie Posts: 3 09/30/09 9:12 PM	JD reminds me of O'Neill for the Yankees during their run in the late 1990's. Kind of quietly put up solid numbers but was huge in the postseason and above average defense. JD has always come up pretty solid in the postseason and hope he continues this year.

He's a Boras client who declined to sign when he was first drafted (greedy). He's missed a lot of time with injuries during his career (wimpy). He opted out of his LA contract because he knew he could sign for more (greedy). He's quiet, doesn't have a lot of outward displays of emotion (wimpy). Of the 103 active players with at least 5000 PA's, J.D. Drew is 4th in runs per plate appearance. Behind Pujols, A-Rod, and Jeter. And just ahead of Manny Ramirez.

Posts: 532 10/01/09 12:09 AM Forum Moderator	I just went to MLB.com, looked up historical stats, sorted by PA's, and put everyone with at least 5000 PA's in an excel spreadsheet. Then made a column of (runs / PA), and sorted.

Actually, he did mention the fact that no GM in baseball evaluates a player based on his RBI total. Or I think it was HR-RBI totals. You'll have to go back in the interview to get an exact quote.
