A bit surprised at Almanzar's inclusion, his season really wasn't anything to write home about. Glad to see Gibson get his due, Lowell had quite a
number of guys that probably just missed this list or could have made it (Alvarez, Castillo, Pichardo, McGuiness) come to mind.

In regard's to Almanzar the talent in the NYPL was down this year unlike years past so that's probably the reason Almanzar made that list.

The top 11 looks normal enough.
But theres a few WTF?? inclusions here.... Like Adam Warren at number 12? there's been literally 100s of similar mid-late college guys with middling stuff posting great ERAs in the NYPL over the past decade of which the have turned into just about 0 ML talent. Even worse maybe Kyle Conley and Ned Medchelli can anyone think of any mid round college OFs who tore up the NYPL that have turned into good ML players ? Also the young guys with crappy stats but good tools like Mr. Almanazar and such. I guess the question is was the depth really that bad that these guys made it or was the guy who wrote the list just picking an odd mix of old college guys with middling tools and good stats, older Foreign guys who really should be playing in the Full seasons if they want to have a career at this point like Paredes, Castro ect... and a Few Highly touted young guys who sucked like Almanazar or Hood. Despite the fact that these various types of players have shown to be pretty much never turn into good ML players? Im a little surprised Gibson is ranked so low. The Paredes guy ranked just ahead of him seems to be similar but older and with crappier all around stats except a few points of batting average. Gibson actually walks alot and seems to have a good approach at the plate young guys who do that already tend to do much better than ones who can't get there walk totals in the teens. |

I thought Valle would be higher on this list, maybe even at #1.

"Hands down, [Westmoreland] stands far and away ahead of the rest of the league," a National League scout said.

The "hands down" gives that quote a lot of dramatic flair.
I'm not surprised at the inclusion of Almanzar and I personally think it is justified. He's got a long way to go, but there were subtle improvements in his game over the course of his time at Lowell. I'll be interested to see what type of swing work has been done heading into ST next March. |

According to the chat, he's Ellsbury with more power and a better arm. (I hope he can fend off two-strike pitches better).

So Corris, you don't think polished guys with good stats and lesser potential (Medchill) should make the list, but you also don't think raw guys with
less present production and higher potential (Almanzar) should either?
As I'm sure you know, not all mid-round selections are made equal. |

I haven't read the blurb on Almanzar yet, but to me it's encouraging to see him on a list like this, because that means he was getting some praise from
people that actually saw him play. It's hard to say anything positive about him when you just look at his year on paper.

NYPL Adam Warren | #15 | ||
|
COrrisCrimsin - I am just curious, have you ever seen Adam Warren pitch? I have seen him pitch in person in the Cape Cod League for two summers and in
the NYPL.
He is an under the radar guy who has merely managed to keep getting better every year because he is such an incredibly hard worker. If you stood next to him, you would also know that he is bigger than 6'1" 200 pounds Baseball America lists him at. Two years ago I brought up his name on this site as a potential person I would like to see the Sox draft. I wouldn't bet against him making it to the majors. I am not saying he is going to be the next Curt Schilling or Josh Beckett, but I think he will continue to be successful. All he is done is win for four years at UNC and now his first year of pro ball. I think the National League scout who is quoted in BA who spoke about his intensity and ability to rise to the occasion, in terms of velocity, is on the mark. |
