The probable roster: SP- Lester, Beckett, Buchholz, Matsuzaka RP- Bard, Wagner, Okajima, Saito, Delcarmen/Ramirez (It's tough, but pick one) CP- Papelbon C- Martinez, Varitek, Kottaras 1B- Youkilis, Kotchman 2B- Pedroia 3B- Lowell SS- Gonzalez, Lowrie LF- Bay CF- Ellsbury, Gathright RF- Drew, Baldelli DH- Ortiz

Veteran Member Posts: 505 09/21/09 5:00 PM	You mentioned they did 10/15 in the last two years? Do you remember what they did in '03-'05? Just curious. Should Wakefield be in the discussion if he's effective and healthy from here on out? Or is his back just too much of a risk?

The Red Sox might not need to carry 3 catchers this year this year since they actually have a catcher who wouldn't need to be PH for late in the game. Why would we ever PH for Varitek? I mean, what if we PH for him, and it goes to extras, and vic martinez gets eaten by dinosaurs? We'd have to use the emergency catcher. -FenwayTheHardWay

Veteran Member Posts: 456 09/21/09 5:10 PM	I wouldn't be surprised if this year they went with 11 pitchers and 14 players... dropping Kottaras... 2 reasons behind my thinking. 1. The Sox do not have a traditional long man in your situation so the extra pitcher could come in handy. 2. With V-Mart expected to do most of the catch there is less need for a 3rd catcher as the chances of him coming out of a game for a pinch hitter or runner are slim to none. In past yeas with Tek and his lack of bat the need was greater to remove him from the game. Thus, all the pitchers you mentioned make it and not Kotteras. Kottaras brings nothing to the equation with V-Mart catching most of the time. Also, the fact that VMart plays first and doesnt' DH means it's easy to swap him to behind the plate if you do take out Tek or if Tek gets hurt in a game. The new rules allow you to take an injured player off the roster in the middle of a series and add another which is another reason not to take 3 catchers. Wasted roster spot, IMO.

I'm only being half-sarcastic. Edit: Apparently, Green's dead leg resulted from a "disc issue in his back," and might be more serious than initially thought. There is no need to keep Kotteras on the roster, particularly if Wakefield on the sidelines. I suspect that Delcarmen, Ramirez and Saito will make the ALDS roster. I believe 04 was the only year from 03-05 where they used something different than 10/15, and IIRC, it was 9/16. Should Wakefield be in the discussion if he's effective and healthy from here on out? Or is his back just too much of a risk? IF he's healthy, then yeah he'd be the long man in the ALCS, dumping out Ramirez or Delcarmen. For a short series like the DS, I don't see a need for a long man. In fact, I think Dice-K would be the long man for the Angels since there's an off day in between games 1, 2, and 3 so Lester would start games 1 and 4 (on full rest), if needed. 2. If you pinch hit for 'Tek, you can always slide Vic behind the plate and Kotchman to first base. I agree, Delcarmen over Kottaras. I would get rid of Delcarmen/Ramirez and replace them with Paul Byrd, because its valuable to have guy to throw out there in a game thats a blowout and save the rest of the bullpen. Dice-K (for the DS). If they advance, throw in Paul Byrd if Wake isn't healthy and subtract Ramirez/Delcarmen. I really can't decide who I'd rather have in the game. Neither. He's been death against lefties all season and has been lights out his last 5-6 outings. .565 OPSa since the ASB. I don't understand why people are so down on him. 191 ERA+ in 2009.

With the emergence of Clay, I guess next year is Beckett's last. This team is going to look so different in 2011. When we win we are going to look back and say how much the roster changed in 2 years.

Saito has been basically good all year... used sparingly and not in high leverage situations for the most part, but he's been good - not perfect, but good. I don't recall any extended stretches of poor performance. Coming off the injury he had, I think we can all agree he's been a success and used properly. Fortunately, the other pieces have been there to allow that usage. Now all bets are off. If he's your best reliever behind Papelbon right now then you use him as such. Ramirez and Delcarmen are good pitchers who are doing a piss poor job right now. Ramirez was over used IMO early in the year which could be contributing to this... hopefully, he'll get some heavy rest down the stretch and the adrenalin of the post season will pick him back up... same with MDC - either way these guys are extra inning guys or your 5th/6th inning guys... If Beckett and Lester do their jobs then you won't need a reliever before the 8th inning during their starts...
