Those on the 40-man who aren't on the active roster: Carter - not coming up - trade Doubront - not coming up - too young Wagner - not coming up - no need for a fifth catcher Bates - not coming up - no need for him on the roster McBeth, Jones - it looks like one of these two is going to be DFA'ed for Matsuzaka, likely the former.

Veteran Member Posts: 298 09/08/09 2:14 PM	Not much faith in another lefty with Hunter Jones either by not calling him up. Shame, would have liked to seen him gotten another chance this season. Got a feeling this will be his last shot before he is waived/DFA'd and somebody will claim him.

Veteran Member Posts: 708 09/08/09 3:20 PM	silver, I am convinced that they are trying to keep Jones in that spot through the winter, and see what the situation is next spring. McBeth and Cabrera are the 2 guys who must be left wondering. If they are smart, they will sign on next year with a team that has bullpen problems. About 25 teams fall into that category.

Veteran Member Posts: 64 09/09/09 6:12 PM	I don't understand what the Sox are doing with their September callups. Why do they need 4 catchers, 3 backup infielders and 4 backup outfielders. Instead of calling up more pitching. It seems to me guys like Cabrera, Mcbeth, and Lopez would have more value than Brown, Woodward, and Anderson.

If, say, Wakefield goes down for the rest of the year, he'll probably get put on the 60 and then they'll go get a pitcher. However, there really is no need to be using your 15th pitcher when you're in a playoff chase, just like there's no need for your 4th backup infielder, as you point out.

Veteran Member Posts: 189 09/10/09 2:40 AM	I just want to point out that they used Brown and Anderson tonight, and Woodward the other day. We have a lot of "lumbering" types in our lineup, and if we can use three players in order to get on base, around to home, and still catch the ball in the bottom of the inning, why not? That being said, I'm not sure that one more pitcher wouldn't hurt if there were room in the clubhouse and dugout. You only have to be useful once to, well, be useful.

My point wasn't that I'd be afraid of losing them. It was that there's no reason to even make the moves. How often would you realistically see McBeth, Cabrera, or Jones pitching? Do you think Francona is going to use them in a game that's even kind of close? You've already got Bowden for mop-up innings, and Tazawa can do that and long relief. Matsuzaka is presumably coming up to Boston for his next start. That gives you 15 pitchers. What's the point of making a roster move for the 16th? Like I said, if Wakefield is done for the year, then you DL him and go get someone. Otherwise, it's pointless.

Here's your pitching staff: Innings from starters: 7.0 - Lester 6.2 - Beckett 6.2 - Buchholz 5.0 - Byrd 5.0 - 5th starter (was Wakefield, will be skipped for two turns) Total: 30.1 innings (of 45.0) Innings from bullpen (every 5 games) 2.1 - Papelbon (hi-lev) 2.0 - Wagner (hi-lev) 2.0 - Saito (mopup) 1.2 - Bard (hi-lev) 1.2 - Ramirez (middle) 1.1 - Delcarmen (middle) 1.1 - Okajima (middle) Total: 12.1 innings (of 14.2) There are 2.1 innings left to be picked up by the non-regs of the bullpen (Tazawa, Bowden), most of which will be picked up by Bowden for now as a two inning middleman. Tazawa will be the true mop-up guy, I think. Dice-K will likely step in for Wakefield or, if Wakefield is healthy, Byrd (who would then become the middleman). There is no functional need for any more pitching.
