Huge news norbit about the Chelsea banning. Does that mean they can't do any trades like the Ibrahimovic/Eto'o swap? If so, then they are gonna have
a hard time replacing the creeping age problem they have. I think they are fine for this year, but next year is gonna be really interesting.

They are going to appeal the decision but Fifa doesn't usually go back on their desicions so probably they'll obby by the ruling. In the article is
says that the punishment will prevent any new players from joining the team, so yes they probably won't be able to do that. This guy Gael Kukuta better be
good.

Holy crap, UEFA seems to be on a bit of a power kick lately talking about insitituting spending limits, suspending eduardo for diving for 2 games and now this?
All of it is over stuff that's been going on for awhile but they've decided to finally do something about it.

Damn, a lot has happened since I posted here (Treble!), nice to see this thread revived. I'm rooting for Argentina just because of Messi too, although
Maradona makes it a little harder for me. The Chelsea ban is harsh, I wouldn't be mad about 1 year but 2 freaking years without being able to sign players
is kinda crazy.
I wonder what ASAL thinks of Michael Owen now:

I just got the list of players that are gonna be starting for Argentina and my god Maradona is even a worse manager than he's a person. Heinze and
Dominguez have no business being on the national team. The only reason Dominguez is going to play is because of this stupid logic that he knows the other
sarting CB (Otamendi) well since they play in the same team in Argentina. Then Heinze who's been worthless ever since his injury 4 years ago. Jesus Datolo
is also another guy who shouldn't even be sniffing the national team. I actually want Argentina to get blown away now just so that they fire Maradona after
the game.

As much as a joke Maradona as manager is if Argentina loses then they are in some serious shit, so I can't root for them to lose for him to get canned. I
don't think Maradona will survive until the WC anyway. They know he stinks and he doesn't exactly have tons of support there either. But whoever
hired him is an absolute idiot on the grandest scale because if it works you have a guy with a huge ego who would be impossible to ever get rid of because of
his history so when things turn sour you are screwed. If it doesn't work you are going to piss off a lot of Maradona fans and seriously hurt your chances
to compete in the WC in which Argentina actually has the talent to win.
More than anything I want the cream rising to the top for the WC so Portugal and Argentia get your heads out of your asses (or in Ronaldo's case probably out of some other dude's ass) and start playing good f*ing ball so that this world cup can be the best it can be. The Euro was absolutely unbelievably good, it was a big reason why I'm getting heavily into soccer again, I really want to see a high quality WC dammit! |

southernredsoxality wrote:Without the Portugese douchebag, and with that dutch asshole injured my hatred of Man United has waned. I've always loved watching Rooney play, and Michael Owen is a personal favorite. I'm not going to be rooting for them anytime soon, but I'm no longer actively hoping for injuries or the firebombing of Old Trafford. A Portugese and Argentina-less World Cup would be fantastic. FYI the best team in Europe so far has been England 7 matches, 7 wins, +22 goal differential(twice that of Spain). Go Denmark! ASAL owns this thread. Owns it.

England has been looking fantastic under Capello. I think their team is a little old, but the benefit is that the core players have been playing together for
almost 4 years now (Terry, Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, A Cole). Rooney is the difference maker on that team though. His injury in 2006 really hurt them
offensively as he was just coming back when the tournament started. With a little more prep time, he could have been the force that he's been currently.
He's been fantastic in the qualifiers so far.

England's definately been great so far, the Netherlands have also done really well too and I think England's taken advantage of beating up on the
lesser teams to get to that differential, however I think along with Spain they are the best bet from Europe to win, in the end I just think Brazil is too
good... again... bastards.
I was kind of hoping that Maradona would put Lisandro lopez as a sub today, but oh well, it doesn seem rather odd for Maradona to have 3 defensive subs and only 1 mid sub. Also those new Man U jerseys are horrendous. |

USMNT v. El Salvador on TeleFutura/ESPNClassic tonight. Any word on lineup? I wish Dempsey wouldn't start, and rather replaced Davies up front late in the
game.

This is the european football thread you blimey ameri-cunt!
just kidding, although as an American I'm almost disgusted in myself for not giving a rat's ass about the U.S. Sure I'd prefer if they made it and did well, but really I don't have much invested. |

It's nice that the US is getting a little more into soccer and that they've had some recent success, however, its still watching an inferior product.
I'm not so involved in soccer that I'm going to watch many US games unless its WC and the opponent is half decent. There's way too much good
soccer going on I feel to spend my time watching US games against El Salvador. I'll pay attention to the US in the WC and root for them, but right now,
I'm watching any game that should be good (Argentina v Brazil) or a game I've got personal interest in (Portugal v Denmark).

Just an absolutely shitty fucking day. While trying to watch the portugal game my computer goes down, so I'm not sure if its good or bad that I didn't
watch them tie, apparently they deserved a win, but I did see bendtner's goal, a true beauty. And then I watch Argentina absolutely crap the bed against
brazil. Sure Brazil is better, but still, no one on Argentina played with any urgency or creativity (outside of the first 5 minutes). It took an absolute
miracle shot to score. Granted Brazil played some excellent defense but I still expected to see more ingenuity in their attack with the forwards they have.
I'm not sure how much to blame Maradona, but one thing is for sure, that team displayed very little tonight.
Still, I think people are overblowing Argentina not making it, they've got easier 3 games than Colombia or Ecuador with 2 points in hand. Hopefully the hand of god bitch slaps Maradona out of the manager's seat and back in the old Argentine woman's beauty salon where he belongs. |

I'm kind of the opposite in regards to the European leagues. I follow the US players more than I am interested in quality footy games. I live and die for
international games, even if the best players aren't playing. The US has really at least tried to increase interest in the states, and the younger
up-and-comers are looking promising (they always do though, don't they?) If a lot of them can get PT over in Europe early in their careers, I think it will
be a major step for US Soccer.
In regards to tonight's game (I only caught the second half), I felt as though the US looked flat except for a few flashes when they moved the ball well (maybe it was more ineptitude of SLV's transition D), and I again felt insulted by the fielding of an inferior lineup. We can only hope a midfield of Torres-Edu-Bradley-Feilhaber/Clark/Adu/whomever is firing on all cylinders come 2010. Bob Bradley always seems to do stupid things in regards to lineups and substitutions...I just hope he goes into "playoff Tito" mode sometime soon; like, before we finish all our qualifiers. [/pipedream] I don't know what sort of shape Mo Edu is in, but does anyone know if he'll have an outside shot of making the squad for the final 2 WCQs in October? I mean even if he's not at 100%, I'd sure like to get a look at him, even as a sub. This team has huge upset potential as we saw in the CC this summer, but having a solid roster (with guys that have actually played together) is going to be key to getting out of even the group stage at the WC. We've got some real offensive potential in our array of young midfielders; I just wish Bradley would let these guys loose rather than having to play more D as a group than they should. It's rough on the MFs when you start Dempsey, Altidore, and Davies. I'd like to see a 4-4-2 or even 3-4-1-2, with Bradley, Edu, Torres (maybe even Adu) cycling on runs with Donovan/Altidore/Davies. EDIT: I heard Bornstein sucked it up again (1st half recap from my buddy).

Argentina sucks. I'm not sure if they really are one of the 4 best teams in South America.
And who the fuck decided Malta is a European country? Whoever that is I hope is burning in the deepest pits of hell, that's one country I could have cared less if ze Germans or the eye-talians would have conquered. Fucking Malta. Congrats to Spain and England who are both the class of Europe. |

If Argentina can't beat Paraguay in Paraguay they don't deserve to go the world cup, am sorry for Messi and Aguero but they should be able to do that.
Another win for Brazil against Chile tonight. This one without Kaka, Robihio, Lucio, Luis Fabiano, and others. They are clearly the best team in the world.

Well, Man City v Arsenal's lost a bunch of punch. tevez and Robinho are out for ManC and Arshavin's out for Arsenal. I'm hoping Arsenal bounces
back and takes out that manU loss on that other Manc team. Tottenham v ManU should be an excellent game.
Also, the Chelsea ban has gotten extended to any players they currently have on loan. That's a bit much and is really just pouring salt on the wound. Well, even without Tevez, Robinho and Arshavin it was still a hell of a match. The 4-2 result couldn't be more misleading. I definately like how City is playing though, absolutely mesmerizing counter attacks. Great game from Bellamy and Phillips with some brilliance from Adebayor (who had a run that should have resulted in a goal).

Nice match-up this week in the champions league. Eto'o vs Guardiola, Ibrahimovic vs Mourinho and yes Barcelona vs Internazionale Milano. Thats the only
game that I can think of this week with two "big" teams meeting. Barcelona is the favorite but this is their first actual challenge this season, I
think it will be a good game.
