I don't think he did much in terms of dispelling the home/away splits he had during his Colorado years. It's not really the Boras factor as much as it is the MFY factor. At 4+ years, I'd rather have Holliday, even at a 15% steeper price, both because he is younger, and because his skill set ages well. However, the years and % might climb drastically if the Yanks decide they perfer Holliday over Bay. The lack of development for Lars and Carter, as well as the inconsistency from Ortiz might make a Bay signing more likely/easy to digest. While at one point it looked like we might have a glut of DH's if we kept Bay, it now looks like that spot will open up after next year (or earlier if they blow off Ortiz or he sucks). This would coincide well with the ETA of some of our top OF prospects (Reddick, Kalish, Bates? Place? Lars? Daeges?). It means that the Sox can sign him, while maintaining flexibility, something they value highly. P.S. BigHead, have you seen his numbers since he was traded???

I really don't see the Red Sox going into next season with both Ortiz and Lowell, so while I'm not advocating the signing of Figgins there's at least a decent chance the Sox have some interest in him this offseason. bighead wrote: His numbers since he was traded raises more questions for me. While it's still uncertain who the "real" Matt Holliday is, the dramatic increase in production probably has more to do with him getting out of Oakland. That ballpark is where hitters go to die, and it's as much an extreme as Coors Field--only on the other end of the spectrum.

I don't think he did much in terms of dispelling the home/away splits he had during his Colorado years. Knowing Boras he is going to want more than 4 years (I'd guess he'd shoot for 7-8) and he'll want Holliday to be paid like a difference maker (18-20 million per). He just doesn't seem like that kind of a difference maker to me. Bay may be streaky but he has proven he can play in this environment (even though you can blame his midseason disappearance on his contract talks). Bay negotiations are a different story all together. Gammons claimed that his agent asked for a "Texieria type" contract when he spoke to the front office during the all star break. As you cited earlier, Bay doesn't seem to be the type of player to age well and getting tied up for big money and a lot of years would not be ideal.
Why didn't you say so in the first place? That's a horse of a different color.

Swisher used to play CF, so what makes him a bad RF (that is your argument right

Hey Steve, how do you think the Matt Holliday situation will turn out after this season? Do you think he'll take one of the big offers he'll receive in free agency or do you think he'll stay in St. Louis, possibly with a home town discount? Steve Phillips (1:26 PM) I think it's gonna come down to the Red Sox and Cardinals for Holliday's services this season, and I believe the Red Sox will win. I think Holliday loves St. Louis, but he hasn't been there long enough to give the hometown discount. The Cardinals will have to pay Pujols a couple years from now, and that will be their priority. Holliday will miss St. Louis, but will love the Green Monster. Dan (CT) Does that mean no Jason Bay in Boston next season? Steve Phillips (1:30 PM) Right. I think negotiations have broken off between Bay and the Red Sox, and my sense is that his streakiness has caused the Sox to pull back and reconsider where to invest their money going forward. Holliday interested the Red Sox last year and at the deadline this season, but he'll have a bullseye on his back with a blue and red "B" come November.
