Exceptional splitters thrown by Papelbon this evening. If that thing sharpens up for the playoffs he's going to be tough.

Last time Bard faced Longoria he hit a 6000 ft homerun to straightaway center. Good call to leave Paps in there for the 9th. He's really good.

Francona dodged a major bullet there. The only thing I think which could redeem him is if Bard was unavailable for the night, which appeared it to be the case.

This is the second time recently where Papelbon's splitter has actually looked legitimate. Very encouraging to see.
Why would we ever PH for Varitek? I mean, what if we PH for him, and it goes to extras, and vic martinez gets eaten by
dinosaurs? We'd have to use the emergency catcher.

no Kotchman for Lowell late in the game ... Francona has an 8-man bench, but he won't use them much.
WED is Hunter Jones day: either he arrives in Tampa, or he goes on waivers to make room for Cabrera or Enrique. |

I don't understand why Francona brought Wagner in in the 7th inning of a 7-2 game. It would make a lot more sense seeing Okajima in the 7th and Wagner in
the 8th. None the less Wagner looked awesome and I am looking forward to seeing him down the stretch.

He is the most successful Sox manager of our lifetimes and has won 2 WS in the last 5 yrs. What do you want from him? His strengths as a manager - patience, loyalty, etc. - result in rough innings and cost the team a game every once in a while, but it's hard to argue that his particular style of managing hasn't contributed to the amazing success of the team over the past half-decade. |

What the hell are people talking about Okajima losing it at the worst time? The guy has been our best reliever for the better part of a month now and it was a
no brainer to bring him in. Terry fucks up because he leaves him in the game too long after seeing he had nothing, but Okajima had to start that inning.

but has Francona's performance as a manager declined ore even significantly changed since then? I don't see it. Ortiz, on the other hand, has
declined. There's a difference. And, while we could blame Francona for sticking with Ortiz too long at DH, I really don't see any internal options
that could have done better. I would argue on behalf of Chris Carter, but his OPS has been less than stellar at AAA this year.
In short, I'm not sure what point you're trying to make . . . |

I think what we all need to stop doing is concentrating any anxieties we might have. now that it's playoff time, into one 9-inning game. Judging Okajima
off one lousy inning that included some dink hits doesn't make any sense. As for Francona, notice that he made the right move once Oki got into hot water.
Papelbon shut the Rays down for two innings. That may be living dangerously but they won, so it is living.

Except for the fact that the Red Sox are performing slightly better than the record last year and less than one win below their 2007. Even compared to 2004
they are only two wins off pace. The team has shown barely any deterioration this year.
All while Ortiz has been sporting a sub-800 OPS. Francona has made his fair share of mistakes this year (like every prior year) and it's more than fine to question his moves, but to bash him constantly is pretty ridiculous. |

Okajima wasn't even bad. He gave up a bunch of bloop hits over Pedroia's head. I thought it was kinda dumb to take him out because he wasn't being
hit hard at all. Well, maybe not dumb, but I think it's generally poor managing to make a decision on a pitcher based on the outcome of a weakly hit ball.
But I guess when you have Jonathan Papelbon, who cares.

He leaves them too long. Last year he cost us a game in the postseason by leaving Beckett too long.He knew Beckett was injured and he still send him out there
in the 6th inning after he struggled for 5 innings. If we won that game the Rays wouldnt have been in the WS. I just dont understand why he does that. In the
beginning of the season again he left Lester too long and blew the lead against the Rays. I could tell that Lester was tired. He didnt know? . I can see why
the Phillies hate him. He may be agood manager to his players but his moves dont make any sense sometimes.

Philly fans hate him because...well...they hate everyone. That really is the only reason.
Francona certainly has his faults as a manager (I think his management in the bullpen is his biggest), but overall he's a very good manager. And he's been nearly flawless in every postseason he's appeared in. Quite frankly, it's all about results, and Tito's done nothing but get them since being named manager of the team.
Why would we ever PH for Varitek? I mean, what if we PH for him, and it goes to extras, and vic martinez gets eaten by

It's great how it seems no one is noticing that Drew is slowly but surely creeping his OPS up to 900 over the past month or so. The man has been
phenomenal and of course not getting any recognition. I know Fangraphs value has its detractors, but according to that site, Drew's value over the course
of his contract has been 40 mil, just around what he's been paid so far.
Of course since Philly Fans hate him, he must suck, right terry? |
