Aaron Crow and Tanner Scheppers have a later deadline because they are Independent league players. So the Royals and Rangers still have time to sign them

re: Renfroe -- The net present value of the deal comes in below the $1,134,000 bonus Boston gave first-round pick Reymond
Fuentes.
Because he was a two -sport athlete the bonus is spread out, reducing the NPV of the contract, and probably dropping about $300k or so (give or take) off the overall cost. |

I would be interested to hear if Strasburg signed an '09 or a '10 deal. If he's signed for '09, I imagine they get him up on September 1, throw
him in the bullpen, and try to sell enough tickets to afford Bryce Harper's bonus next year.
I had a feeling that Volz was going to end up signing, but I'll admit that I wanted another player thrown in today, whether it be Bard, Maile, DeVoss, Dykstra, or even pulling Kline at the last minute, sort of how we signed Weeden right out of Freshman orientation a few years back. Overall, I don't have any large complaints about the Sox draft this year. Another solid draft. |

Discounting in 4 years is a discount rate of 0.9035 which means 1,264,900 (assuming the 1.4 is paid entirely in 4 years time) so I'm going to go ahead and call bullshit, that the NPV is 1,134,000. (Plus that's assuming you get lock in 2.5% compounded interest for 4Y (which is roughly market rate, but not exactly easy to get) |

Good for the Nats to get Strasburg signed at a reasonable number. There was no chance that Boras was going to be stupid enough to sit him out 1 year to enter
next years draft.

LondonSox wrote:Selig probably applies an unrealistic adjustment to the figures that allows MLB to claim that the player is getting much less than we all know he really is. Selig can then say "teams are holding costs down" while the players get their money (and of course the agent can do the same thing in the other direction to make the bonus look that much bigger).

I'd much preferred the Red Sox to sign Devoss than Volz who sounds very similar to Bryce Cox. I was very surprised that the Red Sox gave someone like Volz
who has suffered a significant drop off in his performance over the last year so much money.
Poorest spending of $3 million that I have ever seen.-fcastig 0220

from espn blog:
From Keith Law and Jason Churchill (12:45 a.m. ET): Sources confirmed that No. 2 overall pick Dustin Ackley signed for $7.5 million, not the $9.5 million, with the Mariners. From BA:Five-year major league deal, $6 million bonus, $1.5 million in guaranteed salaries, another $2.5 million possible in salaries depending on how quick he reaches the majors, $7.5 million total guaranteed.

How do the Blue Jays miss 3 or their top 4 picks (and good talent too). On top of losing Rios for nothing and not getting max value for Halladay (whose value
can surely only fall now).
If they hold onto Halladay they get two more good picks they might no sign. I'd be pretty upset if I was a hard core Jays fan. Not like the AL east is getting easier, Yanks and Soxs aren't going anywhere, the Rays are still signing good talent and young and the Os have buckets of young talent coming through. Basement for one... |

I know he is guaranteed more money then Prior over 4 years but was Prior's bonus all up front? Did Prior actually get a bigger bonus then this guy? |

The Sox have gotten a fair amount of plaudits in the past for their ability to "place a value on a player and then walk away" if the price goes too
high. They were able to take that approach both for major league free agents (Teixeira), and in the draft. There's a "feel good" approach to
telling the players they are asking too much and walking away -- a sample from this board just before the signing deadline:
Oh my, they had the nerve to offer him only 3rd to 6th round money. Sham on the Red Sox F.O. These people think the Sox don't do there due dilligence on these picks. They know who derserves what. At least in my eyes they made an offer. That's all I ask. But do the Sox really have a good grasp on value? Or more specifically, are they too fiscally frugal? Take a look at the 2010 draft preview thread. ziggyosk41 wrote: He lists former Sox draftees: Yasmani Grandal, Justin Grimm, and Nick Tepesch as top prospects for next year's draft and he mentions Grandal as perhaps the Top unsigned pick from 2007. (he has Alex Meyer as one of the potential first picks for 2011) Add to this list the history of the unsigned 2005 and 2006 drafts, which featured Matt Laporta, Alan Dykstra and Jason Castro, the 2008 draft that featured Pedro Alvarez all of whom became subsequent first round picks. In addition, the Sox failed to sign players who became 2nd rounder Charlie Blackmon, Bryan Morgado (3rd rounder), and Scott Green (3rd rounder) (I won't include Beau Mills, who was a special case, or Tepesch who was going to be a difficult sign). That's a fairly significant amount of talent unsigned by the Sox. In many cases, the walk-away was over a hundred thousand or so (e.g., Alvarez, who we offered just under a million, and I believe could have gotten done at just over a million). (Thankfully, they shot their wad for Kelly and Westmoreland). Now, I'm not trying to cherry pick, and recognize that extending a further $100,000 or $200,000 for each pick is not entirely feasible. I also acknowledge that many non-monetary factors can cause players to choose college over signing -- I tried to eliminate Tepesch and Mills from my sample for example. That said, Boston seems to have lost a lot more top end players than comparable high-revenue teams like the Yankees and Angels. |

Steve Dillard wrote: For a number of years I've wanted to do an analysis of the unsigned high school draftees. I'll never find the time. Should the Sox have offered more money? Are the players better off going to college? The counter examples to Alvarez, Grandal, et al. are, I think, Neighborgall and Brandon Belt. But how many other top high school talents flame out in college--and that's probably too strong language for Belt. |

Judging from the Gragnani article, the Intl FA spending is directly correlated to the way the Sox approach spending in the Rule 4 draft. So using
diehard's list, this is how the Sox have spent their money through today with Intl signings in blue and Rule 4 in red (signing bonuses only):
1. Jose Iglasias - $6,000,000 2. Jose Vinicio - $1,950,000 3. David Renfroe - $1,400,000 4. Raymond Fuentes - $1,134,000 5. Madison Younginer - $975,000 6. Brandon Jacobs - $750,000 7. Kendal Volz - $550,000 8. Raul Alcantara - $500,000 9. Alex Wilson - $470,700 10. Mario Alcantara - $350,000 11. Miles Head - $335,000 12. Jason Thompson - $300,000 13. Jeremy Hazelbaker - $191,700 14. Renny Parthemore - $150,000 15. Seth Schwinderhammer - $140,000 16. Shannon Wilkerson - $100,000 17. Chris McGuiness - $100,000 18. Alex Hassan - $90,000 Total: $15,486,400 Total Rule 4: $6,686,400 Total Intl: $8,800,000 The combined Rule 4 and Intl FA signings for 2008 equate to $13,072,500. So the Sox increased their year over year player development spending by 18.5%.

I love the table you put together but what I got from the Gragnani article wasn't that Iglesias's money affected his, rather, that his signing blocked
him because they are roughly the same age and position and obviously the Sox think very highly of Iglesias.
