He was playing his first game in the field. It's not a big deal that he was removed.

He wasn't removed for any physical reason, I think it was just because it was his first game in the field, definitley some good news that he is finally
ready to be out there

It's impressive what Kalish is doing, he's always had the tools and pre his injury he seemed capable of being the droll worthy prospect ala
Westmoreland this year. Nice to see that showing again at a much higher level.
Between him and Reddick, and frankly Ellsbury looking a lot better, you have to wonder if you want to give Bay much of anything contract length wise. With Ellsbury Reddick and Kalish that's probably the best defensive outfield I can imagine, all 3 capable of CF and two good arms in the corners. Of course with Papi aging (at best) there is potentially a spot at DH for Bay (which is probably his best position right now!). Bay, Lowell and Papi next year though, sure do make it look like an aging slow team vs Kalish, Reddick and kids. Really interesting transition year this offseason. The other thought about that outfield is it is CHEAP, you got to make runs on Teix's of this world, and Halladay etc. |

Nice to see Middlebrooks getting back to hitting good the last few days. Hopefully he keeps it up and ends the season on a high note. His OPS isn't too far
from .800.
Impact. Dominate.

LondonSox wrote:I know this isn't j-school, but I found this typo rather, well, whimsical on a Monday-morning. You know I love ya, London Sox. My two cents here, is that the clamoring for Kalish to be bumped to #3, merely underscores how deep this organization is right now. This also points to an off-season to remember. Regardless of whether the Red Sox make the post-season this year, the aggressive nature of the FO at the signing deadline and wth IFAs, indicates they are willing to make some blockbuster moves, while being able to reload. This is exactly what they'll need to do to remain competetive.

When was the last time the Sox had a ML player put up a 20/20 over a full season?

Steve Dillard wrote:In the GCL this season, the Sox have REALLY been spreading the playing time around. The only players who are playing something close to 'every day' are Garcia and Blair. Garcia, one could reason, is playing every day because he's the only good shortstop on the roster - they don't appear to be liking Ramos enough to play him there often. As for Blair, he has only been catching every three days or so recently, seeing some time at 3B and DH. For a while Fuentes was playing close to every day too, but Felix Sanchez is basically platooning with him in CF now. As I said, especially recently, the PT has been spread around. Blair/Escobar/Sanchez have been rotating at C. Lora/Boss Moanaroa is a platoon at 1B. Roque/Sallis has been a platoon at 2B, although Roque is starting to also play a lot of 3B, where Ramos had been playing every day until about a week and a half ago (I suspect he may be dinged up). Of course, Head likely will now slide in as the 3B starter. LF has been a 2 games for Schwindenhammer, 1 game for Moko Moanaroa "platoon" for a while now. RF has been a revolving door of Yockey, Bonifacio, and Sanchez, with Peterson playing there a bit earlier in the year, although he's now relegated to just DH duty, apparently injured yet again. However, they're going to have to start making some moves. The recent signings have apparently necessitated some moves. Jennel Hudson is an obvious one, as he hasn't played yet, but they had to have deactivated a player somehow to get Jacobs, Head, and Wogee onto the roster this weekend. My guess is that Tyler Wilson, who hasn't pitched since 8/5, may have been put on the DL. Doesn't mean it's a new injury per se - once Byrd is removed from the roster to pitch for Pawtucket on Wednesday, that would open up a spot that Wilson (or perhaps another signee) would slip into. |

ziggyosk41 wrote: Middlebrooks is probably the streakiest hitter ever born. Seeing as how I'm obsessed with his success, I constantly look at his minorleaguesplits page. I'll agree that it's nice to see him numbers creep upwards, but you absolutely cannot ignore his mercurial BABIP. Looking outside the traditional stats however, one can infer that his pitch recognition skills are improving (at least a little). His IsoD and IsoP show an improving ability to get on base as well as choose the right pitch to hit. I'll continue to hedge my optimism in the meantime however.

Mercurial means ever changing/inconsistent/etc.
The (poor) rule of thumb is to add 0.120 to LD% to get a players BABIP; which in Middlebrooks case would be roughly 0.330 for the past two months. Oddly he's rarely lower than projection (excluding his injury plagued first two months), but is intermittently much higher. From the looks of things, WMB manages to find LOTS of spaces between defenders. You simply can't count on that kind of thing happening in AA or even High A nearly as much. So yes, he's been quite lucky this season. As I said before though; I'll temper my expectations, but will not douse them. He's making the necessary improvements; it's just a matter of continuing to refine his approach because consistency is what it takes to get to the majors.
