The Red Sox have signed 26th-round pick Miles Head for $335,000, more than double MLB's recommended $150,000 maximum for selections after the fifth round. |

IOW, they had reason to break the bank last year b/c they had more high round picks and weren't active in the International FA market. That's not the case this year, with over $12MM in bonuses and contract commitments already agreed to, so you should expect a significantly lower bonus pool for the draft.

But didn't Theo say that both the IFA money and Rule 4 money were totally seperate and that they did not expect the numbers to fall for the draft? |

Quintanariffic wrote: The 5 v. 3 picks in the top 108 would have been a good point if this were the NFL, but it's not, and where we pick players has little to do with what we pay players. FYI, Tazawa falls under last years international signing period. But I understand the rest of the IFA argument and the fact Iglesias' $6M bonus didn't happen until after the draft this year. I just hope he's worth more than Kline, Volz, and the other questionable signee's combined. |

Nexus wrote:That's absolutely not true. While signability picks are a phenomenon unique to baseball that skews the data set somewhat, it is empirically true that high round picks get larger bonuses than lower round picks. Signability picks remain the exception - a small minority - rather than the rule. If you have excess picks in earlier rounds, you are generally going to spend more money than teams with a standard number of picks. Last year, the Sox had a supplemental 1st rounder (Price) and an additioanl 3rd round pick (Fife) vs. this year. They signed those two for a combined $1.3MM, which represents almost a third of the difference between what they've spent to date and what they spent last year. My guess is that they'll end up shelling out another $500K or so (the $6MM figure you cited included Renfroe at $1.5MM, right?) for one or two more guys. It hink it's reasonable to assume that the $3-4MM difference in draft budgets will be accounted for by having fewer picks, fewer high-ceiling signability guys drafted, and a perception of better returns with this year's crop of IFAs. An additional factor was the change in the complexion of the draft this year. Teams were hitting the alleged signability guys early and often. Accordingly, less talent was able to fall to the Red Sox relative to previous years. It would be silly to apply last year's budget to this year's talent pool, otherwise you're spending a lot of money on mediocre talent, and better returns on talent are likely to lie elsewhere. That the Sox went heavy in the Intl FA market this year is likely an indication that they understand this ROI concept pretty clearly. Regardless of what the media may be reporting, you shouldn't be so foolish as to think it's just a coincidence that the Sox had a record pay-out in the Rule 4 draft lass year while being relatively quiet overseas, with the inverse being true this year. (LONG QUOTES, ETC. - AB)

Soxprospects, You may as well start using tennis terms for the draft choices this time of the year, or volleyball even. "serve", "volley",
"game", "match" it goes back and forth so often with several of these gentlemen. I forget almost every year how interesting it is, until we
get this close.

I like their signings. I like their draft (considering it was pretty much an off-year). I expect that there will be a few more signings (Maile, Bard), but at
this point I am content.
