Younginer and family flew to Boston on Wednesday and are expected to return Friday with some sort of news. I'm hearing Younginer is all but a physical away from signing with the Red Sox. Clemson coach Jack Leggett has lost his share of marquee signees to the pros through the years, but this one has to make him want to bang his fist somewhere. Younginer appeared as good as Clemson's until about a week ago, when Boston swooned in and opened negotiations after largely ignoring Younginer for the majority of the summer.

Anything can happen in the final hours, but Gragnani said he thinks the odds are against the Red Sox coming up with the money to sign him. http://www.mytimesdispatch.com/index.php/sports/comments/reed_gragnani_says_30-40_chance_he_signs_with_red_sox/8701/

Getting the $600,000 to $800,000 has never been out of the question. The Red Sox told Gragnani their top priority was to sign a few of their top-round pitchers first. If they have money left after them, then they'll see what they can offer him. Third-round draft pick David Renfroe from Batesville, Miss., Gragnani said, is asking $3 million. And he hasn't signed yet. Neither has Branden Kline, the Sox' sixth-round pick out of Maryland. Kline has also committed to UVA and is leaning towards going to school.
Does Gragnani have a chance to outgrow his Lilliputian physique? If his older brother is any indication, he does. Robbie Gragnani, who was 5'11 when he played for Godwin, hit 6'3 by the time he started playing at VCU. Robbie says that if Reed were 6'3 now, he'd be headed to the pros with a great offer in hand. Reed has the fundamentals that make him a great hitter. "He's got bat speed that you can't teach," Robbie said. Add a few inches to his height, a dozen pounds or so, plus the added speed of higher quality pitchers at the next level, and Reed Gragnani could become a power hitter, Robbie says.

If his current Brian Roberts comp is accurate, and he's already considered a high round talent, then why not use the Kline/Volz money to nab him for $600K - $800K?

Pedroia Where do these kids get this sense of entitlement? What a prat. joshv02 wrote: Its the reporter's description of the coach's description of the player's reaction. I'd not get up in arms about it.
It's not only the small paper reporter's description; it's through the coach. Each time the story gets told it probably grows a little more extreme each time. Also, I think we all know how things are when talking in private to one individual (the coach) about something else especially when that one individual benefits from your decision. Picture the scene - probably on the phone: Coach: "Blaze, how are things going? Have you heard from the Red Sox? Do you know what you're doing yet?"
Blaze Tart: (18 - year old kid - nervous - reacting to the question before answering) "Tssss-Ha - yea coach their offer wasn't good enough. I'm coming to play for you" Coach: "Are you sure" Blaze: "Yea coach definiately%" The the coach tells the paper that reaction by the kid was him laughing at the Red Sox offer and Blaze Tart's reassurance to him was Tart saying he's 100% going to college. Obviously, this could have gone down a million different ways and I could be way off, but it's an example of one possibility. Point is, to just assume the kid is a spoiled brat isn't really fair to him. These are kids, after all, and while I don't feel bad for them, this is their first time going through this cold hard business process and it's a tough thing to handle. I'm sure the Red Sox aren't exactly walking them through it and making them comfortable. They're being treated like a commodity and I'm sure the players will all make mistakes along the way and hopefully they'll learn from it. Also, this kid is probably cocky (like Pedroia) and cocky people come off as jerks a lot. It's a double edged sword for fans with their favorite athletes. It's that cockiness that is a huge part of their drive and success, which is what makes us love them in the first place, but it's the first thing we criticize about them. Then we try to point to another athlete that is great and doesn't come off as cocky...

The Sox have one of the best Player Development Systems in all of baseball. They wouldn't be doing their due diligence if they didn't even offer one of their most interesting draft choices a contract. Regardless of what both sides are saying, a contract has been or will be offered.
MLB teams have until midnight Monday to agree to terms with the players that they selected, but Kline does not expect another offer from the Red Sox.
