Exposito is definitely the most talented catcher in the system. The organization loves his skill set. Exposito has good power and has great actions behind the plate. Wagner is a hard worker who excels defensively. The question is if he will develop enough offense to be a starter at the Major League level. I haven't heard a whole lot about Federowicz, a seventh-rounder last year from the University of North Carolina. I know that he is well-regarded defensively and is putting up good power numbers for Greenville of the South Atlantic League this season. It's too early to get a read on what type of hitter he can be.

Some thoughts on the catcher stats:

--Of the offseason trade options, Salty and Teagarden have been terrible, Montero had middling April-June and a monster July.

--Varitek's fade so far has been noticeable, but not terrible (monthly OPS 881, 824, 750, 760), and not as bad as Martinez (monthly OPS 1082, 881, 802, 530).

--Martinez's CS% is 15.2%. Tek's is 14.4%. At least Martinez's steal frequency is somewhat lower: he has 194 ABs at C this year with 46 attempted steals, vs Tek's 264 ABs with 90 attempted steals.

--Kottaras OPS has exceeded 700 every month since April, and was 808 in July.

--Dusty Brown's 2008 is looking like his career outlier. The odds of him making the majors even as a backup are getting longer every month.

--Wagner's OPS has been respectable this year, but his HR total (5 in 214, including 2 last night) is uninspiring.

--Lots of power from Lavarnway, but concerning K rate. I don't love Federowicz's Greenville K rate either, given (1) that he was mashing the ball, and (2) that he wasn't walking all that much

--Check out this split: VMart as a catcher this year: 247 / 333 / 371 / 704 (194 ABs). VMart as a 1B this year: 329 / 413 / 553 / 966 (170 ABs). Yowza! FWIW, the split went the other way the last 2 years, but he had very few ABs as a 1B until this year.

Oz, can we still expect Brown in September as a 3rd/4th catcher? I think so. The idea of a 3rd catcher is to have 2 catchers on the bench. Victor usually isn't on the bench and could be out of the game to give way to Kotchman.

Will they use Varitek as a late-inning defense replacement for Victor in September, or is Tek not a defensive ungrade?

Assuming Kottaras is back, there doesn't appear to be any need to add a 4th catcher in September. Brown is already on the 40-man, so it would be pretty low cost if the Sox want to reward him for being a good soldier, but the call up would not be on offensive merit (.645 OPS by a 27-year-old in AAA doesn't scream promotion).

Lots of interesting options for next year. I figure you have to find a way to keep Kottaras, which with the DL stint shouldn't be hard. His numbers in a tiny sample are steadily improving and I think even if the Sox don't want him he's got some value somewhere at this point. I'd think anyway.

So V-Mart, Tek, Kottaras, and the kids. None of them are really a full time starting catcher next year in anything but a fluke. Tek and V-Mart can split time, or you are in the trade market again.
Or Expo is an option but not next year, so next year you go with the Vets
Wagner would be a stretch unless he bounces well in AAA but probably would be a good backup due to his catching skills. Great bench catcher long term with upside. If Wagner could really hit in AAA he'd be a great bench guy behind a V-Mart time, moving V-Mart to 1B or DH if you need the defensive C boost.
So next year do we end up with Tek and V-Mart AND Kottaras on the roster? Or you trade V-Mart in the offseason and really try to redo the team.
If you're prepared to trade Paps and V-Mart and Lowell and use the farm can you upgrade 1b/3b and catcher?

This offseason yet again is going to be interesting.
You've got a hole at
C long term (still) but you have two vets on short contracts!
LF (Bay FA)
3B (and have a vet on a short contract)
SS unless Lowrie can finally lock that down (which I think he can)
DH? (What do you do with Papi??)
Rotation (Is Dice-K your 3? Is Buchholz there? Is Wake done? Is Penny or Smoltz back?)
Pen is rock but question on Paplebon as he gets more expensive and worse

Maldonado got the axe today. If he is healthy, he will be useful to some team in the playoff race. (Considering the August 31 rule, which y'all know about.)

The catching situation sure has changed since the day Carlos signed with the Sox.

After posting a higher CERA than Kottaras every month of the season last year, Brown has posted a lower CERA than the other catchers on the team three out of four months this year. He's also had a nice couple of months throwing out base stealers in June and July.

Wagner has continued to throw out base stealers at a high rate and has done a nice job keeping the ball in front of him in is 138 innings at AAA.

Apodaca is a guy we don't talk about much. Just turned 23 last month, hitting a respectable .261 in 153 ABs in AA, had a very nice defensive month in July, allowing no WPs, only one PB, and throwing out 43% of base stealers. After having a much higher CERA than Wagner each month through June, Portland's staff posted a nifty 2.24 ERA with Juan catching in July, 1.42 lower than Otness. Might just be the odds evening out, of course, but fun to watch.

Neither Exposito or Federowicz particulary distinguished themselves keeping the ball in front of them in July. Both had good months throwing out base stealers. As he did in April, May, and June in Greenville, Federowicz posted a lower CERA than the other catcher on the team. Nice for Fed-Ex, but in a no way a meaningful (one month) comparison with Expo.

Through July, Federowicz caught 554 innings this season. In 553 of those innings, he had no passed balls. In the other inning, the 9th vs Wilmington on 7/11, he had three. Funny game.

After seeming to show great improvement in June, a lot of balls again got past Lavarnway in July, including an ugly nine PBs. He was challenged a lot on the base paths, and more than held his own, throwing out 36%.

Including his time in Salem and Greenville, Weeden has thrown out on one of 31 base stealers. He's also given up 13 WPs and 4 PBs in 145.2 innings, for a WP+PB/9 of 1.05.

Man, it was tough to get the ball past Apodaca in July and August. Quite a few got past Expo in August, but only one PB. Juan's ERA was almost a run lower than Expo's in August. SSS

In The Dude's excellent Q&A with Mike Hazen, Hazen mentioned Federowicz' quickness behind the plate. He must have a great ability to focus, too. Three of his four PBs on the season (including his time in Greenvile) were in one inning. There must have been one good-looking woman in the front row during that inning.

It'll be interesting to see how the Sox handle Lavarnway. Again, in Mike's Q&A with Hazen, Hazen made the point that it's important for Ryan's career that he stay behind the plate. Sounds like they're going to keep him there for now. He's in no way ready to move up to Salem defensively, but with the year he had offensively, I think he has to move up so his bat doesn't stagnate. He needs to play a lot, though, to improve, and Federowicz will probably start the year at Salem.

Anyway, not to damn with faint praise, but Ryan gave up only one WP and no PB in six playoff games. Maybe he'll make strides in Instrux.

After getting his feet wet in July, Thomas had a very nice August defensively. A tidy 2.85 ERA, .259 WP+PB/9, and 35% CS. And while he hit only .183 at Greenvile, 4 of his 11 hits were HRs.

One other note - I made the point earlier in the season that Federowicz maintained an ERA a couple of runs lower than Lavarnway over the first few months. Thomas' ERA, too, is a lot lower than Lavarnway's, so that descrapancy may have been more Lavarnway than Federowicz.
