The hopes that LaRoche gained type B status seemed like a pipe dream with Francona loyalty backing Mike Lowell's corpse. The Red Sox seemed to even save cash in this deal, as to this point there haven't been reports of money going back to Atlanta.
A baseball source confirmed to the Globe's Tony Massarotti that the Red Sox have traded LaRoche (and about $1 million in cash) to the Braves for Kotchman.

In 2007, the Braves were in contention at the trade deadline. They decided to trade Neftali Feliz, Jarrod Saltymacchiato, Matt Harrison, Beau Jones and Elvis Andruws to the Rangers for Mark Texeira. It's worth noting that Andruws, Saltalamacchia and Harrison have all had success in the majors, while Feliz is one of the top prospects in the Rangers system. The Braves failed to make the playoffs in 07, and at halfway point of the 2008 season they traded away Texiera to the Angels for Casey Kotchman. Then they just traded Kotchman to get LaRoche from the Red Sox. Let's look at this from another angle. Over the past year and a half the Braves have traded away these players: Mark Texiera Neftali Feliz Beau Jones Matt Harrison Elvis Andruws Jarrod Saltalamacchia Kasey Kotchman And they have gotten back... Adam LaRoche The irony behind all this was that LaRoche was already on the Braves to begin with! They must really like this guy.

They should have either not traded for him at all in the first place, or done a three-way last week with Atlanta and Pittsburgh. I think it was a bush move from a human-relations standpoint, and I hope they apologized sincerely to him for putting him through this.
