The Red Sox have placed outfielder/first baseman Mark Kotsay on waivers this afternoon. If he is not claimed within 48 hours, the club can either release him outright or send him to the minor leagues.
Kotsay has played 27 games this season, with one home run and five RBIs.

I'm still curious what would happen if either Ellsbury or Drew go on the DL. I assume Baldelli can't play full time, and I don't see anyone else
who wouldn't be a problem either in the field or at the plate. If the answer is Reddick, it seems like it he should have been promoted 3 weeks ago. Other
than hoping that Kotsay clears waivers, what's the contingency plan here?
Edit: Massarotti says Nick Green is the fifth outfielder, so maybe he and Baldelli would share time? Or they could call up Carter or Bates to get some starts in right, with Green as a defensive replacement? All unappealing propositions, if you ask me.

Might as well call up Bailey/carter/Duncan, or preferably Bates if they have an injury to a corner OF, would do just as good with the bat compared to Kotsay. I would hope they would consider calling up Reddick from AA and maybe they would consider it if Ellsbury would miss a few games to play CF. Really hope that Francona finally gets over his love affair with certain players now, this Kotsay "fling" of his should have never, ever happened to start with. Bring Casey back and the Sox have the LH bat from the start, instead of doing without until the end of July. |

It is my understanding that Kotsay cannot be outrighted to minors without his consent. If he clears waivers, he has the choice to become a free agent.
Veterans' consent "If a player has 5 years of major-league service, he may not be assigned to a minor-league team without his consent, regardless of whether he has already been outrighted once, even if he clears waivers. If the player withholds consent, the team must either release him or keep him on the major league roster. In either case, the player must continue to be paid under the terms of his contract. "waived", "designated for assignment" .... After he was designated for assignment, he was put on waivers.
After the DFA, can they delay putting him on waivers for a few days if they so choose? I do not know. Waivers is a 48-hour process. Of course, after he clears waivers, they can trade him. |

What makes you think the Sox are trading for an outfielder? You think it's worth it to them to give up something for a fifth outfielder, or do you think that one of Bay, Ellsbury, or Drew is getting replaced?

It is reasonable to think Sox will add another centerfielder to AAA, as Sox will attempt to upgrade over Bubba Bell, Reddick, & Guzman. Remember, deadline
of 9/1 (in the organization) to be postseason eligible. They are a little thin right now with centerfielders. (Van Every hasn't been replaced.)
They just traded for another outfielder, Duncan. It is just that he isn't a centerfielder. |
