i never said that but there is a chance we trade carter and a good chance we trade also travis denker or gil velasquez or dusty brown are gonna get cut cause
we have to free up space on the 40 man roster and those are the guys that dont fit in the redsox plans denker probably the most likely to go

Pantera wrote: I've done a fair bit more reading about his defense after feeling like a fool for not looking up the exact stats that were out there the first time around and I came across an interesting piece of information. He's made one error in 836 chances at first base which obviously that takes into account all the balls thrown directly to him on ground-outs. So from what I can tell, his range is poor but when he does get to a ball he's probably not going to screw it up. In the end, he's probably not going to be Doug Mientkiewicz part II. |

Nice move at a reasonable cost. Gives us the luxury of putting Lowell on the DL, which seems likely at some point over the next few months, maybe even now.

Funny, but during the time it was undetermined who Boston was giving up in the LaRoche trade, the name that kept bouncing around in my head was Feliux
Doubrant. Just kinda thought that might be the level of prospect Pittsburgh would require...and Theo would be willing to part with...to get the deal done. Then
last night, Doubrant goes out and throws a CG, 4-hit shutout w/ 0 BB's and 10 K's. The kid's only 21 and has put up very respectable numbers @ AA
Portland. He may not be the "high ceiling" prospect that some say Kelly & Pimentel are but, IMO, those are suspect projections in the first
place. What we do know is the kid is young and has done well at AA. At this point, he may even be a year ahead of his age projection. Glad Boston held on to
him.

Doubront looked to be in complete control. He wasn't over-powering (high 80s early and low 90s through the middle innings) but had the Rock Cats
off-balance all evening. He came across as a pitcher - poised and in charge of his entire repetoire - rather than a thrower. It was an impressive performance
given his age and level.

If they're just going to put Lowell back on the DL to make room for LaRoche, then there's no offensive upgrade here. LaRoche should be platooned, and
Lowell's a better option to platoon him with than Lowrie, which would keep Green in the lineup with Lowrie, which is almost exactly the same as leaving
Kotsay in the lineup.

Well, someone has to be removed. Right now the 25 man roster has 26 men on it, without counting Wake, and with Lugo gone.

That's not exactly true. Without Kotsay the Sox have only Baldelli as an OF backup. Sure, Youk can play almost anywhere in a pinch, but only in an
emergency would they put him in the OF. Remember, Lugo also could play the OF so the Sox really had three OF reserves while he was around.
So now the OF situation is a little snug. It is a risk I think they should take, but it is there. |

DCRi wrote: I'll put it this way: Kotsay shouldn't have a role on this team anymore. He's only played 45 innings in the outfield this year, and I'm assuming almost all of those were when Baldelli was on the DL. Baldelli is a fine fielder at all 3 outfield positions. If he gets injured, we can call someone up. And in a pinch, Drew plays an adequate CF. |

Guzman, Bell or Reddick. All can field the positions, which is the first most important thing. Who knows, one or more might hit better than Kotsay.

Yeah, I don't know why I left out Guzman.
Before you scoff, note that he's at least playing well enough that the Sox were ok with releasing Jonathan Van Every (I don't see why he wouldn't have accepted an assignment to Pawtucket if all he's doing is rehabbing anyway). |

He is out for the season, and he signed with Pittsburgh today. He will rehab with them and try to break camp with the big league club in 2010. He has a much
better chance of reaching the majors with the Pirates.

I thought JVE did OK with the Sox and seemed like a decent 4th OF for many teams. So he should have a better shot with Pittsburgh. Interesting that this all
happened in the few days around the LaRoche trade.
