would we just cut kotsay or trade him for a decent prospect like what we would get for penny or chris carter?

A solid support teammate does not sound like a glowing recommendation.

BTW, Strickland remains in low-A (West Virginia Power) but Argenis Diaz is promoted to AAA (Indianapolis Indians).

He has played 105 AA games and I believe he would have been promoted to AAA this month if not traded (which is a likely reason that he was traded) in order to promote Yamaico Navarro. |

My head exploded seeing Diaz and Hanley in the same phrase.

Do the sox have the ability to let Kotsay hang out in Pawtucket till the September call ups or would he have to clear waivers first?

I can't believe the 7 pages of almost all nonsense i just read.... that's not fair to those of you that had interesting things to say, so i take it
back...
but how anyone can be excited about this trade is beyond me. Adam Laroche is a decent player and while i tend to agree with whoever said they don't really buy second half splits it is hard to ignore such a long track record of it. It really doesn't make sense in a logical way though so I'm not going to bank on it but rather hope for it... scratch that pray for it because he's useless if he doesn't hit his second half numbers for the Sox. Is anyone else the least bit concerned about the fact that this guy has always under performed, doesn't do anything particularly well and has never been a part time player before? This is a guy that cannot get into a rhythm playing every day, how does he get into one playing irregularly? off topic alert, but really bothering me: Guy who loves Alex Rios, please watch him play and get past the tools please. Tools are great when you are drafted. When you are due 9.7M (2010), 12M (2011), 12M (2012), 12.5 (2013), 12.5 (2014) w/ a 13.5 M club option - which will be the 1M buyout instead (2015)... he's got a .733 OPS this year - Drew' is over .800... Last year (2008) Drew's was almost .900... Rios was BELOW .800 AGAIN... All he really does better than Drew is stealing bases... don't forget Drew is a 5 tool players too... argh - i hate Alex Rios |

That was a really poorly written post. I'm not ever sure what most of it means.

I just don't see how you could be against this acquisition-- there's almost no downside.
Mike Lowell is a corpse; he can't field and doesn't get on base. If you give a good slice of his AB's against RHP to LaRoche (.275/.347/.500 for his career), that's a net gain. If it doesn't work out, you didn't give up a whole lot to get him anyway and, at the very least, he replaces Mark Kotsay on the back of the bench. A guy like Kotsay really has no place on this team, considering his bat is too light to play a corner, but he's not a good enough defender to reliably play center. Regardless, when you play in the AL East and have a corner infielder posting a .329 OBA, it's time to make a move. This is a low-cost solution that should help. The debate rages
His defense is not below average according to multiple scouting reports I've read AMarshall. Amarshall's response. He's been negative in UZR 5/6 years in his career. Keith Law apparently sided with Amarshall, calling LaRoche a "below average 1st baseman" He's got a chat on tommorow so perhaps someone could ask him for a more complete answer. If he answers, I'd be surprised if the answer just refers to UZR. |

At the Seadogs game tonite (in New Britain), there was no talk of the trade of Diaz, no blurb on the electronic scoreboard, no discussion in the stands as to
why Iggy was starting both halves of the doubleheader. When I heard Pittsburgh involved in the trade, I thought of their need for SS and noticed Iggy again,
and sure enough, the guy next to me pulled up internet on his cell ... "Diaz and Strickland".
Those minorleague fans with Red Sox caps on are really on top of things! And so is the Rock Cats whatchama-call-it guy yacking about the game ... and telling us whose birthday it is today. Of course, half the people in the stands don't even know the Seadogs are affiliated with the Sox. |

Can you report on the actual game in the minor league thread?

DesignatedForAssignment wrote:They'd have to be really dense because the other half of the fans were wearing Red Sox gear. I heard about the trade on one of the NY stations while driving to the game. They just reported it as "for two minor leaguers." As soon as I saw Suarez was also starting the second game I knew Diaz must have been in the deal. BTW: During the Rock Cats' post game report they noted that Navarro was down on the field playing catch with a member of the Sea Dogs staff. He must have arrived during the game. |

The trade for LaRoche was not about a perfect solution for the big bat the Sox need, but a guy that can come off of the bench and fill in for Lowell if he goes
on the DL again and play a few games a week while he has to rest now and also a LH bat off the bench that is a much better option than the weak hitting Kotsay,
nothing more and they got him dirt cheap. Now the Sox can look for that bigger bat without having to give up anything worth an awful lot in this deal. It was a
win/win situation here. If LaRoche hits good in Fenway, the Sox win and he may get that type "B" FA status and the Sox offer him arbitration, if he
performs poorly, nothing really lost.
As have said he many times before, the Sox could have had a better LH bat all along from the bench just by bringing back Sean Casey, so what if he's not the most adept 1B? he won't hurt you with his bat and his glove is not that bad, certainly a far better hitter than Kotsay is. Hindsight now though. |

So now with two of the Red Sox top 60 prospects gone, who will become prospects #59 and # 60? How does Yeiper Castillo and Ryan Dent sound?
