Laroche used to be a fastball-only hitter, but in his maturation he has been able to his breaking pitches much better.
And he's a spokesman for people with ADD.

With LaRoche in the lineup LH and RH batters can be alternated through the first seven spots with two switchhitters, Varitek and Lowrie at 8th and 9th. It will
be interesting to see if Francona does that.

I don't see how LaRoche's first and second half splits can be dismissed when he has hit much better in the second half every year except 2005 - in
which his stats still improved every month except for an awful august. That's 5 years of data, and it's not like hitting is a statistically simple as
flipping a coin. It's not pure probability, with lots of other factors contributing that may lead him to be a consistently more effective hitter in the
second half. Maybe it takes him a while to get a feel for hitting again each year. I don't know, but there's obviously something to this that
shouldn't be so readily dismissed.

Even while writing about the LaRoche deal, Tony Massarotti of the Globe took a shot at Drew"...sudden and worrisome ineffectiveness - he's batting
.236 now..." See, I'm not the only one. He does a good job in right, I'll give him that, but he's way overdue for his annual back spasams.

Second straight deal with Pitt and Boston involving a Laroche brother.
This was also interesting, from Gammons: This deal has been on the table for three weeks, and after Boston lost its fourth straight Tuesday and declined to trade Clay Buchholz for Victor Martinez, the Red Sox took Adam LaRoche. |

Have fun watching Adam LaRoche with his unique standing as bat stance. It's either love him or hate him with the way he's hitting.

At first, I read the thread title really quickly and thought the Red Sox traded for Andy LaRoche. Damn.

The ads on this site are getting more distracting all the time....but what a distraction!
From Massarotti's piece on the trade today: "The other player sent to Pittsburgh is a Class-A pitcher by the name of Hunter Strickland, on whom the above evaluator had little knowledge." Is M clueless? |

The part that blows me away is that he'd actually take the time to type that instead of doing 5 minutes worth of homework. This trade goes a long way towards fixing what's been our season long 'ball and chain' (for those of you that are married, the term has other meanings), left side defence. We've had major issues with SS, 3B & LF. Lowrie's back and now for the majority of the innings (more RHP), we'll have Youk instead of Lowell at 3B. Youk clearly has much more range than 2009 Lowell, a definite upgrade. LF is now upgraded as well because Bay won't be seeing as many fielding opportunities as he's had, particularly the one's that exploit his lack of range and arm.

As far as I can remember, the "cash" for the Laroche deal could be part of the "cash considerations" in the Corsaletti deal. I dont
remember hearing anything in return for sending Corsaletti to the Pirates.
I was always a Corsaletti fan.
