Roman Mendez - where's the hype? |

Just tweeted with Ben Badler on his "Friday Sleepers" meme, and got back the following:

If there's one place I'd like to teleport to and catch a glimpse of few prospects, it would be Florida for the GCL games (as a fly on the wall).
Fantastic peripherals for an 18 year old. Most impressive is the command with just 16 walks in 51 innings or less that 3 every nine innings. And it seems he
has two + pitches and a developing changeup. I suppose the buzz will start once we can all get to hear about him (and see him) on a regular basis.

Well, I'll contribute the numbers:
2008: 51 IP, 43 H, 15 ER, 1 HR, 46/16 K/BB, .94 GO/AO 2009: 24 IP, 11 H, 4 ER, 0 HR, 25/4 K/BB, 1.14 GO/AO Looks good to me, but I've never seen him pitch, so I, as well, am quite unfamiliar. |

Show me about 125 IP and I might start getting excited. The numbers are nice, but they don't really jump out at me. Julio Rodriguez has better numbers
in the same league and is a month younger. Where's his hype?
If someone can reproduce Clayton Kershaw's 2006 numbers in the GCL, then I'll start salivating. |

Well for one he is not going to pitch 125 innings his first year in the states. So you can throw that out the window.

I meant a total of 125 in the US. Figure 70ish this year, probably less.
Edit: I don't think any pitcher has thrown 125 in single season of the GCL, for that matter. Hell, maybe any rookie league. |

For those of you that have Comcast cable in New England there is a difficult to find channel; NESN On Demand. One of the profiles is of Roman Mendez discussing
pitching, his personal goals, and his impressions of Stolmy Pimentel.

From the Boston Herald article a few days back:
"RHP Roman Mendez, turns 19 next week. Power pitcher has reached 96 mph, with good secondary pitches. Big-bodied, yet to fill out. First four GCL starts: 21 strikeouts in 19 innings with just four walks; 1.42 ERA." Here is his profile from this site: "Has a lot of room to fill out his frame. His fastball has nice late movement, sits between 89-92 mph, and has topped out at 96 mph. Also has an above average slider and a developing changeup. Good command. " That is a pretty good scouting report and darn good early results. I would like to see him get a bump up to Lowell and start full season ball next year. I never realized he threw this hard. |

Manny Rivera and Roman Mendez have both been very successful this year, and began the year ranked closely. They climbed in the SP rankings together since the
GCL season started, however, in the latest edition, they are separated by 13 spots. I'm not arguing the ranking, I'm just interested in what people
have seen that might have led to their differing paths, especially given their recent results.
Rivera in July: 1.50 ERA, 22/6 K/BB, 1.61 GO/AO in 24.0 IP Mendez in July: 1.80 ERA, 25/3 K/BB, 0.81 GO/AO in 25.0 IP |

Because Roman Mendez has better stuff and is more projectable than Manny Rivera. That's my guess.

Because Rivera is 11 months older than Mendez, and because Mendez throws 96 mph and Rivera doesn't.
Their rankings were the same as last week's. Rankings discussion needs to go in the Meta Forum, please. |
