At this point I'd like to get something straight: If the Nationals don't sign Strasburgthis summer, his one option is to go back for his senior year of
college, and the Nationals get the #2 pick in the 2010 draft, right? So nothing would prevent them (assuming they have next year's #1 pick) from drafting
Harper and Strasburg again and negotiating with Strasburg when he has less leverage? Is that right?
If I were the Nationals, dealing with Boras at this point, I think I'd go for a pre-emptive strike. Boras wants a once-in-a-lifetime deal for Strasburg. So make an early offer of, say, $25 million, point out that it is more than twice as much as any other offer to a baseball draftee in history (so Boras is getting the clear pre-eminent deal he says is appropriate) and make clear that that is THE offer. Don't wiggle from that, and make it clear to Boras that if Strasburg doesn't sign, they'll draft him again next year and make a smaller offer, when he has less leverage. I really think such an approach puts the Nationals in great shape in the court of public opinion. If Boras wants to hold out for more in the current economic climate under circumstances where the Nationals would be offering a boatload of money and giving him the pre-eminent deal that he says is a requirement for this negotiation, I'd like to see what the public thinks about that. |

I'm pretty sure that would need permission from Strasburg to draft him again.

Strasburg would need to agree to let the Nationals draft him again. If they failed to do so this year, I can't imagine Boras would let the Nats draft him
again.

Quite frequently the things that hang up deals with Boras are the various "extras" that he often demands, such as one-time outs, major league
contracts, no trade clauses, etc.
I have no idea what the right dollar amount is, but $25 million seems high to me for a college pitcher, no matter how good he appears to be. But if that is what it takes, the Nationals almost have no choice, given their dire circumstances. However, if I were them I certainly would not agree to any one-time outs or no trade clauses. What might ultimately benefit the Nats the most would be to trade him in a year or two. If he is as good as many think, and he shows it, his value in a trade will be higher then than it is now, given the current skepticism of many in baseball. |

BP with a draft review up on the main page. A sample:
Final Summary: Instead of making a big splash the way they had in the previous draft, the Red Sox played it a little closer to the vest this year, but they still have a shot at turning some of their later-round picks into something much more than the talent normally found there.I would have pasted more but......there's not much to each blurb....... |

there was a pretty cool article on BA today about Draft Prospects and the process of inviting them to workouts before the draft. I'm not sure if it's

McGuiness, a junior from James Island High School, was picked in the 13th round of last week's Major League Baseball draft by the Red Sox, but could have
returned to The Citadel for his senior season.
Instead, he will sign for what he expects to be a six-figure bonus and report to Boston's Class A team in Lowell, Mass., to begin play in the short-season New York-Penn League. http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2009/jun/17/bulldogs_mcguiness_sign_red_sox86236/ |

If you are somebody that has to read something into everything (guity here), this acceptance speech says a lot about our first 25 picks:
Head, a recent graduate of Whitewater High School, worked out at Minute Maid Park (home of the Astros), Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park the week before. During his workout at Fenway, the third baseman clobbered a ball over the Green Monster and said 'I want to play for the Red Sox.' The Red Sox wanted to select Head as well, but they had other needs to fill first. "They told Miles they would give him what he was looking for, but he would be selected in a later round," said Beverly. The Heads had no idea just how late a round Miles would be selected in and the waiting game was a bit stressful. "I just feel relief more than anything," said Miles, praising the Red Sox personnel. "I really liked the scouts and just thought everybody was very hands on and courteous." There is a lot to like about Miles Head too and the Red Sox weren't the only ones interested in a player who hit .528 in his senior season with 14 home runs, four grand slams and 48 RBIs with a 1.260 slugging percentage. In the fourth round, several teams expressed their interest in the third baseman, but he and his family remained patient and waited for the Red Sox to come calling. They did in the 26th round with the 798th pick. Head had other options. He had signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Georgia and play ball for Coach Dave Perno. Instead, he will sign a contract with the Boston Red Sox and report to Ft. Myers, Fla. in a few weeks for rookie ball.

Just out of curiosity, what do we think Miles Head signed for? The article on the Summer Follow page said "early round money" Are we talking like
3-4th round money? Like $300,000-400,000?

from Keith Law's Chat yesterday:
"Paul H. (Chelmsford, MA) Keith, will Yaz's grandson sign, and is he a legit prospect? Keith Law I am pretty confident he'll end up at school (Vanderbilt). Seemed like a courtesy draft to me - he's not a great pro prospect right now." we pretty much knew that already just backs that up.

Matt Koch has come a long way since sporting a 5-0 record and 1.10 ERA for the 2007 Cherokee team that won the Class 2A state title. A year ago, when he went 5-1 and was the pitcher of record in a 4-2 loss to Davenport Assumption in the 2A state title game, he started adding a changeup, a curve and a slider to his repertoire. http://www.siouxcityjournal.com/articles/2009/06/17/sports/sports//21e3110dd35793f0862575d700827e51.txt |

sounds like someone to keep an eye on over the summer and make a run at. It says he works at 88-90mph, but he's 6-3 185lbs, so maybe there more room to
fill out. Secondary pitches sound promising though. I haven't seen anything about bonus demands so we'll see...
