Seth Schwindenhammer
Unlike Thome and Wikoff, Schwindenhammer has had no problem gaining the attention of scouts while at Limestone.
Schwindenhammer didn't join the Rockets' varsity squad full time until his junior year. He responded by hitting .427 with 13 home runs and 42 RBIs, which caused scouts to take notice. A summer on the showcase circuit further cemented his status as the state's premier power hitter.
"He's got the best swing in the state," said San Francisco Giants scout Page Kirkpatrick.
Despite attempts to pitch around him as a senior, Schwindenhammer still managed to better his junior year by hitting .434 with 15 home runs and 54 RBIs. Those numbers have bumped from a potential 11th- to 25th-round pick to a top-10 selection.
"Coming into my senior year, I was thinking between 11 and 25," Schwindenhammer said. "Now, everybody is telling me top 10, so I must have done something to catch their attention."
Schwindenhammer finds himself in the enviable position of having several different options. He could choose to sign a professional contract or attend Illinois on a 75 percent scholarship, but then he wouldn't be draft eligible again until 2012. He could also attend junior college, which would let him retain his yearly draft eligibility.
"Illinois was my dream school and when they offered, I thought I was set," Schwindenhammer said. "It's a very tough decision."
