Update: According to Alex Speier of WEEI, Atchison's deal is non-guaranteed, and pays him $420,000 in 2010 with two team options that would pay him $440,000 in 2011 and $600,000 in 2012 if exercised. Atchison reportedly has one minor league option year remaining, and he will be given the chance to earn a Major League bullpen role in spring training.

Alex Speier has the contract details, and claims one option remaining.

Per the story in the Herald this morning, I believe Theo said he has one option left, although I could be confused and he indicated he has at least one option left.

People expect to be impressed with a near major league minimum signing with two Sox options ? On the other hand, I guess we could have gotten Lackey for the same dollars. He'll be one of several candidates for a spring training shot that he isn't likely to get then, become AAA depth. Not a bad deal, creative contract.

After watching him here in Tacoma, color me unimpressed with the signing. I hope he's gained a lot of poise in Japan (as well as an out-pitch, beyond a decent slider). If not, he's every bit the AAAA hurler I envisioned when I saw him at Cheney Stadium a few years ago.

In 2006, he played 30 games in the minors, but wasn't on a 40-man roster at all that year, so no option used. And in 2005, he played 19 games in the minors, but that appears to be a rehab assignment, so no option used... But I see his 7/30/04 transaction is listed as "recalled" by ESPN and rotoworld, so it's possible he was already on the 40-man at that point, perhaps to protect him from the rule 5 draft.

Atchison was originally drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the forty-ninth round of the 1998 Draft. He spent seven years in the Seattle organization, primarily in the minor leagues, only making 31 appearances out of the bullpen for the Mariners in short stints in 2004 and 2005. He signed with the San Francisco Giants in 2007, making 22 appearances out of the bullpen with a 4.11 ERA. Atchison was then signed by the Boston Red Sox to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training in 2008 before being sold to Hanshin. Last season with Hanshin, Atchison posted a 1.70 ERA in 75 games across 90.0 innings, with 81 strikeouts against 20 walks.

In parts of three Major League seasons, Atchison has posted a 4.10 ERA with a 2-3 record over 68.0 innings in...

He pitched well in 2009:

Atchison was one of Hanshin's top bullpen arms last year, posting a 1.70 era in 90 innings over 75 appearances. Hanshin wanted to bring him back next year, but according to reports, Atchison wanted to return to the States for family and lifestyle reasons.

Looks like a cheap arm that could be an effective bullpen innings-eater.
