Mike Leake will be the Reds 5th starter, completely skipping the minors (for now anyways). For a guy with a pedestrian fastball I really enjoyed watching this kid pitch in college...he could get some filthy movement on his pitches and put the ball where he wanted.

I believe every spring training game I've seen on ESPN has had the Yankees or the Phillies in it. I get they were in the Series but variety is the spice of life.

Yankee designated hitter Nick Johnson just fouled a ball off his right knee in the first inning against the Orioles and had to come out of the game. The Yankees had been having a relatively injury-free spring training.

Did anyone else notice that Brandon Moss was DFA by the Bucos. He was made expendable when the Pirates claimed Hayden Penn (ouch!).

Rangers claimed Ryan Garko off waivers from the Mariners.

Dave Murphy is going on the DL with the Mets. Not many good options for the Mets at 1B, although Chris Carter is having a pretty nice spring. Perhaps now is a good time to try to fleece Omar Minaya by trading them Mike Lowell? They need to get off to a good start given the end of the past two years and the MFY grabbing all the headlines.

Rangers claimed Ryan Garko off waivers from the Mariners. My personal speculation is that this effectively ends any reasonable shot of a Lowell trade to Texas-- unless Garko doesn't stick, he'll be their RH backup 1B/DH.

If I recall correctly, that was the main reason that Theo wanted him in the first place. Not only to never have to face him, but his stats against us were good enough that we believed that he'd do the same for us. Talk about a swing and a miss.

A great piece on how the Braves scouted Jason Heyward prior to the 2007 Draft:

Al Goetz needed to make the rest of the baseball world think the Atlanta Braves wanted nothing to do with Jason Heyward. So he did what any reasonable scout would. Goetz turned into a stalker.

Yeah, assuming their plan for him lead to that shoulder injury he had at the end of the 2008 season. He hasn't been the same since.
