Maybe this is nitpicking, but it's a sunk cost, so it really depends on who the other 3B and C options are. Sure, if it's Tek, you're not going to get as much value from him as you would from Lowell or some other guys. But if you bring in Shoppach, are their bats similar enough, and do you make enough gains elsewhere (like the 3B glove perhaps) to make the slide worth it a little more often? Perhaps.

If he plays almost all of his games at 1B (where the average OPS last year was .846), he becomes a slightly above average commodity. Considering that he's about an average defender at both positions, and it's obviously much easier to find a good-hitting first baseman than a good-hitting catcher, there should be no reason to move him until he can no longer play the position.
